Reports say Gorby lives near Moscow.
Politics abhors a vacuum. It was absolutely necessary for the US to take advantage of the situation and assure that the Soviet Union could not be ressurected by a strong charismatic leader. Gorbachev no doubt regrets how he handled the transition. Putin no doubt wishes it was he and not the doddering ,drunk Yeltsin who had power after Gorbachev.
Nevertheless history will eventually look favorably on Gorbachev. Also at the time Gorbachev expressed gratitude to the US for the foodstuffs that Bush sent them in their time of critical need and disorganization.
Also in the final analysis the American people will not fight a bloody war or risk nuclear annihilation contesting how thesese eastern Europeans set their borders.
And you are still a commie Gorby.
He’s not wrong, but expanding NATO was one of the only decisions that has worked out for us.
Remember it was nations like Poland, Romania, and Estonia that had our back in the Iraq War when the rest of our traditional allies rejected us.
Our arrogant mistake was leading these allies into the Middle East mess in the hopes that like Eastern Europe we could free another set of lands from tyranny.
If you ever go to Eastern Europe things get worse and worse the closer you get to Ukraine. Corruption causes their poverty. We have no vital interest there.
This is how politicians pretty much must treat the loser. Look at the way the French treated the defeated Germans after WWI. Even though several high officials including generals warned that the terms were too harsh and would lead to later problems, the politicians felt they had to punish the Germans so they’d be seen better by their constituents. Look at the Sykes Pecot treaty dividing up the middle east. The complete destruction of the Ottoman empire...etc.
The winners who didn’t do this were the Allies at the end of WWII. In Europe and Japan, but probably because they needed allies against the Soviets.
In ancient times, it was normal to take a few days and behead all of the warriors on the other side. Either that, or cut off a foot so they couldn’t run away from their new slavery.
The US was just being...the winner. I suspect had the
Soviets “won” we’d all be speaking Russian now.
And a lot of Ukrainians are now moving to Poland.
There are similarities between the US and ancient Rome after the fall of Carthage. Once Carthage was destroyed, Romans began to factionalize against each other, eventually leading to civil wars. Without an external enemy, it seems people then find an internal enemy.
And Russia had our back in Afghanistan when the Muslim terrorist backing 'Stans and Turkey prevented overland resupply.
Russia also had our back providing specific Intelligence on infiltrating Chechen and ISIS Terrorists.
In the Middle East we did a great job of freeing the Muslim Brotherhood, al Qaeda, and ISIS and moving 'em to all of Europe.
He’s still alive? Who knew?
“Maybe it’s because the Russians, unlike us, seem to get that history is history, the good and the bad, and don’t try to cover it up, “
I have read a few Russian history books over the years and the 200 year Mongol occupation is a dark and cancerous subject that is glossed over and only referenced at it’s end as a conquest by Alexander Nevsky in the rise of Novgorod.
[snip] Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said Friday that Washington grew “arrogant and self-confident” after the collapse of the Soviet Union, leading to the expansion of the NATO military alliance. [/snip]
the reality:
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev grew “arrogant and self-confident” leading to his political downfall, removal from office, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the expansion of the NATO military alliance.
Gorbachev says U.S. became “arrogant” after Soviet Union collapsed
/\
Uh,,, that would be those Marxists your commie ilk transplanted into our country a-hole.
Thanks for nothing.
“Putin’s Dialectic” is a good place to start.

Gorbachev is right on this. GW Bush poked the Bear in the eye after the fall.
Sure. That’s hard to deny. What we should have done is harder to say.
