Coal miner’s union calls on Manchin to reverse stance on Build Back Better
YAHOO news ^ | 12-21-21 | Maroosha Muzaffar

The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), which represents West Virginia coal miners as well, said that the bill contained important measures that would benefit coal miners — like an extension of funding to aid victims of black lung disease, tax incentives to urge manufacturers to build new factories and employ ex-miners and protect union workers.

Cecil Roberts, the union’s president said in a statement: “We are disappointed that the bill will not pass. We urge Senator Manchin to revisit his opposition to this legislation and work with his colleagues to pass something that will help keep coal miners working, and have a meaningful impact on our members, their families, and their communities.”

“Because UNIONS get a BIG payday in that bill!”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Zackly.

Also, if you want all those special-interest goodies, (”like an extension of funding to aid victims of black lung disease, tax incentives to urge manufacturers to build new factories and employ ex-miners and protect union workers”), have them brought up in a bill and see if they stand on their own merits.

ALL unions! - I suspect the AFL-CIO and other unions played a role in writing that portion of BBB.

Who did the UMWA endorse in ‘20? In ‘16? In ‘12? I think I can guess.

That’s what I always wonder about. Why does Congress sometimes come up with bills thousands of pages long, which nobody has read? And these bills always allegedly have such great benefits.

I agree with you. Everything in build back better should be voted on individually. Let them make the case for universal pre K, child care subsidies, green new deal etc on their own.

I question why the Democrats decide to try to ram through a Christmas tree full of liberal dreams in the first place. Let’s bring up each issue one by one. If all of these items are so beneficial, then certainly the Congress would approve them one by one. They don’t have to be part of a gigantic piece of legislation to be enacted.

sure the bill takes care of the sick miners, and kills their jobs at the same time.

These unions don't represent workers anymore. They represent retirees ... and they never hesitate to campaign for their retirees even if their working members get screwed in the process.

Look at the membership numbers for some of these unions in old industries. It's pathetic to see how this dynamic works. I think the United Steelworkers has something like ten retirees among its members for every one active worker.

Unions ‘elite’ are often commies and don’t give give a damn about their workers.

And of course, Manchin(’s family) being the OWNERS of a coal business, The UMW is going to have an adversarial relationship with him long before this legislation reared its ugly head.

Do the workers know the union supports an anti-coal administration?

I have been predicting a cave ...let’s see how long it will take him to cry uncle! My 2cents worth.. By the time we come back from the holidays you will see a different subdued Manchin! The evil plantation-rats know how to play ball! Nobody leaves Tara without the screws being applied tightly or whipped into submission! Once you sell your soul to the demonrats you can never leave. That is their Hotel California contract!

In 2016 the workers broke ranks with their unions. I guess Manchin has to decide if he’s going to represent the mobbed-up union, or the worker bees.

Let’s destroy the entire country for generations and force the worst of conditions on Americans, taking everyone down to poverty level so that a few of our members will benefit.

FU UNIONS.

Sincerely,

FORMER AFL-CIO member
