MINNEAPOLIS – A Minnesota jury on Monday began deliberating manslaughter charges in the trial against former Minneapolis-area police officer Kim Potter for shooting and killing 20-year-old Daunte Wright in April 2021.

The 12-person jury – made up of six men and six women – heard instructions from Judge Regina Chu on Monday morning, followed by the closing arguments from Assistant District Attorney Erin Eldridge, for the prosecution, and defense attorney Earl Gray. The state's rebuttal was presented by prosecutor Matthew Frank.

During deliberations, the jury will be sequestered to a local hotel, and will only be allowed to contact family.

Over the course of the trial, the prosecution called 25 witnesses to the stand over six days of testimony. Meanwhile, the defense presented its case over two days and called eight witnesses, including Potter herself.

If a verdict is not reached by Thursday, Dec. 23rd, the jury will be allowed to return home for Christmas Eve and the Christmas holiday. Unless a verdict is reached by that time, deliberations will resume on Monday, Dec. 27th.

The 12-person jury is made up of nine White panelists and three people of color – two Asian women and a Black woman. The alternate jurors are a White man and a White woman.

Potter, 49, has been charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter for fatally shooting Wright during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb, on April 11, 2021.

In Potter’s body camera footage from the shooting, she can be heard yelling, "I’ll tase you!" and "Taser! Taser! Taser!" before firing her handgun.

I am conflicted over this one. 20+ years as a cop. Should have been familiar with all her equipment. She immediately realized that she had a major lapse in judgement. I’m amazed her career was this long without a major mishap. Early onset dementia? I don’t know.

I have been driving for 40 years and never had an accident. Does that mean that if I have one now I should go to jail without regard for the circumstances? They are called accidents for a reason.

I thought they have their gun on one side and the taser on the other; also the taser is a bright color.

She’s charged with manslaughter, I don’t see any way she doesn’t get convicted.

Yes it was accidental, but so is every person every drunk driver has ever killed.

My speculation is that she's been working behind a desk for years and had forgotten how to do real police work, and was put out on the street out of necessity because of the rampant crime last year.

I honestly don't GAF about the result. This is a case involving a useless career government employee and a useless career criminal.

Police police their own. So she likely had other mishaps that were covered up. She looks like an idiot, too.

People make mistakes. Even the best of us. Fortunately they seldom achieve this level.

Accidental manslaughter. (2nd or 3rd degree, if the state has laws like that)...3-4 years in jail, monetary fines, ...and off the force. Do police officers have personal malpractice insurance for this?

Police officers have qualified immunity against lawsuits for actions taken while on the job. That's why people usually sue the department or the local government.

She's been charged with first degree manslaughter and second degree manslaughter. Max sentence is 15 years on the first charge and 10 on the second. If convicted she'll probably be sentenced somewhere in the middle.
