The Group of Seven economic powers told Russia on Sunday to “de-escalate” its military buildup near the Ukrainian border, warning that an invasion would have “massive consequences” and inflict severe economic pain on Moscow.
Foreign ministers from the United States, Britain and the rest of the G-7, joined by the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, issued a joint statement declaring themselves “united in our condemnation of Russia’s military buildup and aggressive rhetoric towards Ukraine.”
The G-7 called on Russia to “de-escalate, pursue diplomatic channels, and abide by its international commitments on transparency of military activities,” and praised Ukraine’s “restraint.”
“Any use of force to change borders is strictly prohibited under international law. Russia should be in no doubt that further military aggression against Ukraine would have massive consequences and severe cost in response,” the statement said.
Russia’s movement of weapons and troops to the border region dominated weekend talks among foreign ministers from the G-7 wealthy democracies in the English city of Liverpool.
The U.S. and it allies worry that the buildup could be precursor to an invasion, and have vowed to inflict heavy sanctions on Russia’s economy if that happens.
Moscow denies having any plans to attack Ukraine and accuses Kyiv of its own allegedly aggressive designs.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the conference host, said the G-7 was sending a “powerful signal to our adversaries and our allies.”

Lemme guess...
Putin almost suffered an aneurysm trying to stifle his laughter.
Signed,
Vlad.
Kisses.
“massive consequences”
Putin: “ oouoo, you’re scarin’ me “
But it’s OK for Nato to ramp up Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into a sort of militaristic playpen, holding military exercises right next to the Russian border, stationing thousands of troops there and training them to… attack Russia.
All of this current mess goes back to the 1990s, as the Wall came down, and the Warsaw Pact disappeared. There should have been a US decision for a massive downsizing over a ten-year period, to shut down all US bases in Europe. It never happened.
We didn’t keep the end of the bargain.
“holding military exercises right next to the Russian border”
Their entire countries are right next to the Russian border.
“stationing thousands of troops there and training them to ...attack Russia.”
SERIOUSLY?!
The Baltic States are training to attack Russia?!?!
What kind of commie sympathizer are you? Stalin would have said as much.
LOL, just what does Putie have to fear from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania?
The Europeans had best hope Putin waits till spring. It could get very cold in Berlin this January with no Russian natural gas or oil.
Putin saw our new missele the unicorn dong one..sprays sprinkles and water to.make rainbows..with Jessie painted on blowing a kiss.

Instead, we enlarged NATO, further surrounding Russia. It is understandable Russia would distrust us.
So Poland joining NATO is a threat to Russia? NATO does not pose an existential threat to Russia – only to Russia’s ability to bully its former satellites with impunity.
Vlad is dancing to “Putin on the Ritz” while
175K Ruskies get ready to attack the Ukies.
Yeah, that character is about as scary as any G7 leader. Feminine guys, an old senile guy and a couple of women. Very scary.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania aren’t “attacking Russia” - and they would not get involved in that. They are too wary of the Russian eagle.
In fact, those three have been and ARE so desperate to not be swallowed up by Russia for the third time that, since 1990, they have joined every international organization - NATO, EC, EU, eurozone - to tie themselves to the West and prevent Russia from pulling a Crimea on them.
There is no correlation between NATO wargames in threatened NATO countries that have never attacked Russia and have no intention of doing so AND Russian buildup adjacent to territory it has made no secret of wanting to annex
The thing is - Russia doesn’t want to do more than threaten that.
The reasons they don’t want to do more than threaten are:
1. They need the cash
2. They fear that if they cut it off, then alternative supplies (USA, Qatar etc.) will be sought and Russia will lose market share.
The US presence in Central Europe is not related to this action.
Russia sees the Donetsk basin and Tanais as the way for it to dominate the Black Sea.
Ukraine ought to give it up, but Ukraine is a weak state which has not had the chance to really define itself. So if Donetsk goes, then Ukraine could break up (similar to Spain not willing to let Catalunya go)
