Juat what demand drove this invention? I mean, a new machine for committing suicide? WTF? Why don't the Swiss stick to chocolate, clocks, and shady banking?

This is what you get when you deny the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.

It's a suicide booth like in the Futurama cartoons.
https://futurama.fandom.com/wiki/Suicide_Booth
Suicide Booths are booths found on nearly every street in the year 3000. They are roughly the same size as a phone booth. When in use, a sign above the entrance lights up. They showcase the light attitude towards death in the 31st century.
Suicide booths were invented somewhere between 2006 and 2008. Since 2008, America's most important brand of suicide booths is Stop'n'Drop. Stop'n'Drop suicide booths have two modes of death: "quick and painless" and "slow and horrible", which is apparently synonymous with "collect call", and "clumsy bludgeoning". A suicide in a suicide booth usually costs 25 cents.

More pleasant than Zyklon B, perhaps, but both products of the same evil.

The world has gone crazy.
If “Heidi” was remade in 2021, she would use this device on her grandfather so she could inherit his house and land and put a meth lab on the property.

Did anyone catch the term “hypocapnia”? Some environmental idiots are starting to claim that CO2 is a poison. But this machine kills by reducing the CO2 and O2 in your bloodstream!
CO2 in the air is actually a potential asphyxiant. It can displace needed oxygen to the point where you do not inhale enough oxygen, but it is not inherently a poison.

A “disorientated” and “euphoric” feeling then follows, before they eventually lose consciousness. Well we know Jeb Bush would approve.
