'If you're on this call, your employment here is TERMINATED': CEO of mortgage lender Better.com lays off 900 workers in Zoom call - then calls them so lazy they were effectively 'stealing' from customers

The CEO of an online mortgage lender fired 900 of his employees in a brutal Zoom call - then slammed them for being so 'lazy' they effectively 'stole' from customers.

Vishal Garg axed around nine per cent of Better.com's workforce last Wednesday - three weeks before Christmas - including its entire diversity, equity and inclusion team, which deals with complaints about racism and sexism in the workplace.

Garg told them bluntly: 'This isn't news that you're going to want to hear...If you're on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off. Your employment here is terminated effective immediately.'

Garg, who has been accused of being 'erratic' by workers, later doubled-down in a scathing blog post which saw him lay into his staff for 'stealing' through laziness.

The father-of-three wrote on professional network Blind: 'You guys know that at least 250 of the people terminated were working an average of 2 hours a day while clocking 8 hours+ a day in the payroll system?'

Don't I wish that were true.

Just concluded monitoring our Monday morning rush of high wealth clients trying to login and manage their money. Averaging over 100,000 transactions/sec right now and performance is flying right along. Closed the major incident swat call and getting on with my day. Problem solved.

I need a nap already.

Hilarous. I take a lunch-hour nap, often. I love WAH.

Congrats on your successful debug work!

I'm just trying to hang on until Dec. 15th, then I'm off until Jan 4th. Lack of taking meaningful vacation time this year hasn't helped.

That has been an issue; stretched the comfort zone a bit to plan domestic and international vacations where available and enjoyable. Getting rid of the inclusion and diversity VPs and departments would jumpstart the economy.

“I’m heading towards a promotion to Systems Architect.”

When they converted me to Faculty, I lost that title and just became an Applications Analyst.

” I’m getting to be too old for this sh*t. Turned 59 last week and feeling every bit of it I’m so run down after almost two years of this crap.”

63 and feeling the same but I don’t know what I would if I wasn’t working. Probably just get another coding job.

Someone asked me why I didn’t just develop an app and sell it. I said “I don’t want to work for myself because I would be working for an azzhole”.

Although I was not in the software business I can very easily believe what you have said.

“Oh, and they spent no time bringing in Tata Consulting, who cocked things up even worse than Deloitte’s EI’s did.”

I’m convinced the word Tata is Hindi for “Make This Worse”

Ill admit, I lost some of my motivation for work. I do what I need to do, stay away from the politics, stay from crap with others, also I care less to be top dog and have the corner office, except in my own home. Already tired of the politics, double standards, I just want to save up alot of money, and rent properties, and be semi retired, enough of corporate world.

It’s aggravating because they don’t distinguish between what really needs to be done well and right away.

My boss used to call it “no sense of urgency”. I worked in a time sensitive department. Everything had to be finished by 8:00 am 7 days a week or the effluent would trickle down from the castle. I was the “hit man”, the guy that made it happen by hook or crook. Lots of co-workers didn’t like my style, but I was un-touchable to the boss.

I couldn't possibly agree with you more. I've two more years to work. Plan is to retire by 62. I'm already four years past what I'd planned for, though divorce did that to me. (sigh.)

I've focused on my career, rebuilding my wealth and my two sons since divorce 5 years ago. Much more rewarding than living with a despicable, hateful woman.

You're not missing anything. Incompetent, stupid, lazy, "don't get it" at all. They're the TCS rejects IMO, and TCS ain't much better.

My company had to let go two people about 4 months ago that wanted to keep working from home. The problem was neither one was getting their work done. Therefore, other employees in the office had to pick up the slack. The final straw was when one of them did not get back to one of the traders regarding a problem for about 5 hours. He went into the boss and complained. They let her go the next week.

The other person was trying to take care of her grandchild and do her job at the same time. It was more of a mutual, hey this is not going to work anymore. Both of these women had been long term employees(9-10 years).

Much more rewarding than living with a despicable, hateful woman.

It's right in the Bible:

Proverbs 21:19 “Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.”

Proverbs 27:15-16 “A continual dripping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike. Trying to keep her in check is like stopping a wind storm or grabbing oil with your right hand.”

Proverbs 25:24 “It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.”

That is OFFICIALLY EMPLOYEE THEFT.

You are collecting paychecks based upon hours you NEVER WORKED.

That is easy to prosecute if the employer wishes.

GOOD for him for firing them.

Good for him. If 2/8 working hours is the norm for those axed, he waited too long.

And, yes, time spent working is not directly linked to productivity. If you are an independent consultant hired on to do work, how long you take is your problem, and a boss has no business tasking you on not doing 8 hours. That said, mortgage approval is a small task, desk job. The mroe time you are at your desk the more the company gets out of you.

What is his beef with dolphins?

As an aside, IBM routinely kicked out lower 10% of performers every year. Competition makes you keen. Being keen marks you as a good provider. A good provider passes on his genes.
It is called natural selection and evolution.

He must have not had the monetary incentives that we had.

But more than that it was highly technical, Innovative, and in-demand, and that’s exactly what I loved to do Hi-Tech electrical and electronics work. It was great I loved every minute. Dream job.
