Black man with dreadlocks sues his employer for discrimination after he was told to 'cut his hair so it can't touch his ears, eyes or shoulders

A black job applicant is suing his employer after its San Diego office told him he had to cut his dreadlocks in order to get the gig, but the company is now saying it's a 'miscommunication.'

Jeffrey Thornton filed a lawsuit on Monday against his employer, event company Encore Group, after its San Diego office denied him employment unless he cut his hair.

Thornton has worked for the company as a technician since 2016 in its Florida office, but decided to move to the San Diego office after being furloughed in 2020 and hearing the California office was hiring more positions.

He interviewed for a technical supervisor position on November 1, where the hiring manager informed him his hair had to change in order to be officially offered the role.

'I was told I was being recommended by my East Coast references and that I should find the transition to be no problem,' he said at a press conference on November 30 from inside a barbershop.

'All that was left was to discuss the dress code. I expected to have to remove my ear gauges, that's not a problem, [and] I'd be willing to trim my facial face. But I wasn't prepared to be told I would need to cut my hair in order to comply with Encore standards,' he said.

Encore is now claiming it was a 'miscommunication' and 'maintaining a diverse and inclusive workspace' is a part of its 'core values.

Only 14 states recognize the CROWN Act, which stands for 'creating a respectful and open world for natural hair.' California - where Thornton relocated to after getting strong recommendations from his East Coast references following being furloughed - was the first state to recognize the act as a law

There are certain people to avoid hiring due to excessive lawsuits.

Call me narrow-minded, but I find dreadlocks unpleasant to look at. Creepy and unsanitary as well.

It’s yucky enough on a Rastaman on the beach in Jamaica. Bringing me food, or selling me something? I’ll go elsewhere thank you.

I think the best foundation for a dress code at any company would be not to dress like a lunatic or a clown--unless the company is in the insanity business or the circus business.

But in all cases, the only workable code is to dress as your employer asks you to dress for work, or find a gig that meets your all-important style requirements.

Psycho.

It is disgusting, dreadlocks I mean. They cannot even wash their hair, and it is very unlikely to actually be their hair in the first place.

the company is now saying it's a 'miscommunication.'

Now that's for sure. Their mistake was calling the guy back.

The business is private and can impose a dress code. The applicant is deranged to believe he’s being discriminated against. His hair is being discriminated against as not conforming to the employers dress code for a particular job or position.

If the employer says loose the dreadlocks to get the gig... you loose the hair or find employment elsewhere.

There is no lawsuit here. Just another idiot complaining like a child because he can’t get his way.

Plus he’s culturally appropriating Egyptian culture; women were wearing that hair style as far back as 1500BC.

We have a dress code at work that says no facial hair. I guess because it looks unprofessional and untrustworthy like Abe Lincoln and Jesus.

Thing I always wondered about is men are expected to dress conservatively, but women seem to have competitions to find outfits that show as much skin as possible. That would be fine if they were attractive, but most are not, but then since they are half naked, they also want the heater turned up to a hundred and eleventy billion degrees

I don’t, however some do not look good with dreadlocks. I have seen females in dreadlocks but their dreadlocks look contained and pull back it looks very professional. Yet there are some who dreadlocks look like they are imitating Sideshow Bob. LOL

In my employment contract, there were clauses about dress, hygiene, and grooming and so forth........oh and Must Speak English......

I took the job. I signed the contract. I did this willingly. They, my company, pay me. If I break the contract, I’m gone. they don’t pay me. Really pretty straight forward IMO.
