An off-duty Arizona police officer has been fired after fatally shooting a disabled man in a wheelchair for allegedly shoplifting from a local Walmart. Officer Ryan Remington was terminated for excessive use of force on Wednesday after firing nine rounds at 61-year-old Richard Lee Richards on Tuesday, leaving him dead at the scene.
An officer at the scene said authorities asked Richards for a receipt, but allege he pulled out a knife instead, saying “here’s your receipt.” The incident was recorded on Remington’s body camera, showing the suspect entering a neighboring Lowe’s store before things turned deadly.
After following the suspect to his car alongside Remington, a Walmart employee claims Richards said “if you want me to put down the knife, you’re going to have to shoot me.” Moments later, Remington was seen on the ground handcuffing Richards, even though he was already dead.
Sounds like the victim definitely had issues.
But cuffing him after shooting him dead? That seems like.... overkill.

So are they saying the guy had 9 lives, and the cop shot all of them?
Proper procedure.
Sorry, the guy was an armed robber. How else do you handle verbally resistant armed robbers? He had it coming.

Would an off-duty officer likely have Mace with him?
I’m thinking a couple of blasts of Mace in the face would have put the perp into compliance pretty quickly.
Or even a Taser for that matter?
Mental illness... it is now a death sentence. I’m sure the guy was a true immediate threat with that fast wheelchair he was driving.
It was out of the ballpark excessive. It makes me wonder if stuff like this is done to give cops a bad name. The guy was disabled and in a chair/scooter, what happened to Tasing him or cracking him in the head with a night stick?
When I use to drive a cab in NYC in the 1990s I would have lunatics chasing me around the cab with a knife trying to rob me or having some road rage fit. This cop was such a pussy that some crippled guy in a chair terrified him so much he had to blow him away in the back 9 times? What the hell? My 95 year old grandma has more gonads than this guy
Saw the video, the disabled man was CLEARLY not a threat. I believe that there is a very strong case for a murder charge.
I wonder how many dogs this guy has shot because they “looked menacing”.
If this story is anywhere near accurate the ex-cop will soon be facing murder charges.

Unfortunately, Binger wanna be, you don’t have ALL the facts of the entire situation LIKE what preceded the little bit we have on body cam ...

YOU need to know those things BEFORE you try this case; HAVE you interviewed ALL those involved?
There are multiple videos that I watched. From the parking lot, from the body cam, from the Lowes. None of them showed any threat by the disabled man.
BEYOND what I just posted above, I have to agree with Sans-Culotte who wrote:
