Kevin McCarthy’s Never-Ending Dignity Loss Derby

With all the rush of new news and information I wanted to flag something for your attention that is at least slightly under the media radar. All signs point to a strong Republican midterm election in 2022, with the House the better prospect for Republican control. That means Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy becomes Speaker. Or actually maybe it doesn’t. A bunch of Republicans have started making clear that’s not at all a sure thing.

Needless to say they’re Trumpers, various versions of the ex-President’s men. And because of that they’re using the tactics of their movement: a mix of taunts and ‘jokes’ meant to add menace with nominal deniability, put McCarthy off balance and simply make clear who’s boss.

Former Rep. Mark Meadows was Trump’s last Chief of Staff. He’s teetering on the edge of a criminal contempt citation from the Jan 6th Committee. He remains very close to Trump, acting as something like his cat’s paw . A few weeks ago Meadows suggested that Trump should become Speaker of the House if Republicans take power in January 2023. (Remember, the Speaker does not technically have to be a member of the House.) This was half joking, or presented as such. But that is the style. Just joking. But not joking.

Over the same few weeks there’s been a rising chorus of support for an alternative candidate for Speaker. Maybe Jim Jordan of Ohio. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, notionally a half-defrocked member of the caucus but in fact one of its leaders, has been pushing the idea that McCarthy won’t cut it.

Then on Monday Meadows showed up on a rightwing talk radio show in Bakersfield, California taking the ‘GOP congressional leadership’ to task for being RINOs and weaklings.

If the media is helping to prevent McCarthy from becoming speaker, they're doing us a favor!

“All signs point to a strong Republican midterm election in 2022”

People keep forgetting Schumer is sitting on S1 just waiting for the right time to release it and steal another election.

Or Paul Ryan. It's depressing how many of these GOP establishment types end up in leadership positions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They have been Assistant Democrats, which is worse than just being weak.
“Why can’t we ever get a pit bull in Leadership?”
We had one in Gingrich, and then in Tom Delay but the Boehner boys worked to undermine them.
Very few want the job, for starters. The dirty little secret is the Speaker spends the majority of his time raising money for the RNC. It’s awful, how they’ve set the system up.
Also, to be Chair of a Committee, you have to committ to raising a certain amount for the RNC each year. They get assessed “dues.”. For tral. There is a semi-secret “menu” of prices and positions.
Just. Awful.
The subtitle of that book could very well be “Losers, One and All”.
McCarthy was a guest on Mark Levin's radio program earlier this fall ... an interview I found quite disappointing. While I hold Levin in very high regard, his conversation with McCarthy was no more than the type of disc ussion we have every day on this forum.
When you have the leader of the Republican caucus in the House across the table from you you cannot just talk about how the Democrats are passing all this legislation with the smallest of a majority -- we all know that! You hit him high and hard with tough questions: "So, Kev, what are you doing about it?" "Are you just biding your time to the midterm elections; and, if this is so (and it appears to be so), how can you think of yourself as a 'leader', Kev?" "What are you going to do over the next year to at least thwart the Democrats' plans to cripple America, Kev?"
He's not just another "professional politician" ... McCarthy is in a position of power and authority ... essentially representing the significant majority of Americans who didn't vote for FJB! Trying to avoid "political mistakes" is not the characteristic of a leader; it's a characteristic of a coward (ask Mike Pence, Kev).
The reason the RINOs always get speaker is because you need 218 votes and most Republicans in office are moderates. The conservative caucus is only 50-60 reps. Louie Ghomert, Jim Jordan etc cannot get 218 votes. Sad but true.
Very accurate at post 11 and it is the same system for the DNC.
The party is in charge of leadership positions and it is mostly based on fundraising. A fact most do not know or fail to understand.
