Authorities in New York's Long Island are investigating a blast that left a crater and was felt miles away Sunday. Police are working with the FBI on the probe, to determine whether it could have been a prelude to something bigger. The Suffolk County Police Department said the explosion occurred on Fox Island, off the coast of West Babylon, around 11:40 a.m. when a device was detonated. Authorities received nearly three dozen 911 calls, the department told Fox News.

I was truly terrified of those sweating old sticks of dynamite — I think it was Apache Powder Co — and was tiptoeing thru the plowed field to get it in place, just to get it out of my hands, so we could detonate it.

Until the corrupt FBI releases a residue report, that’s probably a good guess. But I have a feeling it’ll all disappear down the rabbit hole.

When I was a kid I put some calcium carbide into a plastic gallon milk jug and added water and screwed the cap on. Poked a hole in the side so the gas could escape then squeezed it and lit the gas coming out. It was very cool until I stopped squeezing the the flame got sucked into the jug. BOOM! My ears rang for 3 days.

I remember those carbide lamps we used when caving. When you would refill them they had to be lit again. If the sparker didn’t work right at first, the gas would build up so when you finally got a spark, there was a big flash. Kind of scary when you were half a mile back in a cave.

A simple pipe bomb would have left a crater 10 times that size.
This is nothing

Ever try Conestoga Toy Company Bangsite! stuff? Cannon and tanks etc that use CaCl. and you spark em off with a striker. Old school toys (dad had them in the 50s.) Still made. lots of fun till you have to clean them. I have my dads and my uncles. use them on the 4th of July, like dad did when he was around.
