Buttigieg: Families who buy electric vehicles 'never have to worry about gas prices again'
The Hill ^ | November 29, 2021 | Maureen Breslin

Posted on 11/29/2021 9:49:01 AM PST by karpov

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stressed in a new interview that families who buy electric vehicles (EVs) "never have to worry about gas prices again."

While speaking on MSNBC's "The Sunday Show With Jonathan Capehart," Buttigieg noted that Democrats' proposed social spending package includes incentives to make it more affordable to buy an electric vehicle.

Buttigieg said that families would essentially have a "$12,500 discount" in transportation costs, adding that "families who own that vehicle will never have to worry about gas prices again."

"The people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income," Buttigieg said.

"They would gain the most by having that vehicle. These are the very residents who have not always been connected to electric vehicles that are viewed as kind of a luxury item," he added.

"If we can make the electric vehicle less expensive for everybody, more people can take advantage, and we'll be selling more American-made EVs, which means in time they'll become less expensive to make and to buy for everybody," Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg's comments come after the Department of Energy announced last week that it would release 50 million barrels of oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to control rising gas prices.

EVs are less than 1% of all vehicles on the road, idiot. Teh world will be using more oil for a long time, not less.

You can’t build an EV without using oil, which affects its price and upkeep expense.

Reclaimed coal strip mine below. Coal mining companies have to put up huge surety bonds before opening the mine to assure that the land will be restored after the mining ends. I doubt there are any such surety bonds for cobalt, copper, nickel, magnesium, or lithium mines.

How do they power the charge stations. I better not ask these questions, don’t want to get on the FBI’s radar.

People who have to regularly drive long distances would most benefit? The charge doesn’t last forever and takes much longer to restore than filling up the gas tank.

This is ridiculous and clueless.

It would not need to be so heavily subsidized if it were presently viable, either. Let the market sort that out...if it becomes viable (with faster charging the future), so be it...we are not there yet.

Look you f’ing poofter. If you want me to have a brand new EV then trade me straight across for my ‘02 Blazer and you can square up with the dealer. Plus I’m going to need that $12K when it comes time to replace the Li-Ion battery in 5 years. Actually....you’d eventually screw me for that too with higher taxes! Just please tell your boss/handlers to put the country right back where they found it on 11/6/21 and everything will be fine.

What a fool.

...families who own that vehicle will never have to worry about gas prices again...

I guess if you have the understanding of basic economics of a typical leftist you might buy into that. Yet the rest of us understand that fuel costs (and energy costs in general) drive much of the prices of everything not just gas/diesel. As gas/diesel prices go up, you can drive your EV to the store to pay more for groceries etc.

...underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower income...

What exactly is he blathering about "underserved?" Oh, and I just checked, even with all the credits applied, the cheapest EVs (read that as smallest, least capable) to be had right now are about $20,000. Not sure how well they hold their value on the used market, or what condition you might find their battery packs after several years of use. But those same lower income families can pick up a good used car (eg. a 2010 Camry) for half the initial cost of the cheapest EV.

There was a guy down the street who owned two Volt’s.

They seemed to have disappeared rather quickly from his driveway

The people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas

They are also the most likely to make long haul trips that require fast refueling. There is a reason why people choose not to buy electric vehicles in rural areas, CERTAINLY not as a primary vehicle. I am not even against electric vehicles, but don't care for idiots telling me what I should want. The guy who manages to successfully sell something that people didn't know they wanted doesn't need subsidies and regulations to make it happen (e.g. Henry Ford, Steve Jobs).

Mayor Pete knows what is best for us. 61% of electricity is generated by fossil fuels.

Yup. Not to mention we don't generate anything close to enough electricity to charge our cars if they were all electric.

I was recently wondering just how stupid this buttplug guy really is. Several recent articles have removed any doubt that he is entirely stupid.
