New York Times columnist says he has 'high tolerance' for inflation in 'white-hot economy'

The media continues to downplay mass inflation in today’s economy, including New York Times columnist David Brooks, who encouraged a "white-hot economy" and said he has a "high tolerance" for inflation.

"I want a white-hot economy," he said. "I want a white-hot economy that will raise wages at the bottom, which is happening, that will bring people back into the labor force, which is happening, which is spreading wealth around the country and not concentrating in a few cities."

Problem is, tax brackets won’t keep up - putting bottom wages into higher tax rates, while inflation ensures bigger numbers don’t mean greater wealth. It’s a way to tax the poor more via plausible deniability.

Even the "benign" inflation of the sort Brooks desires to repair the economy from Covid is a type of inflation that might conceivably be beneficial if one thinks only of the mass but when one contemplates the plight of individuals, such as you and me, the effect is hardly benign.

To an instinctive leftist like Brooks, the individual must always be sacrificed for the general good. In the alternative case of benign inflation that he postulates, he presumes that wages will keep up with inflation, a fantasy, but still he forgets that folks on fixed income will surely be left behind.
