BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) — This year, safety is of the essence when you’re driving around town, and in and out of the car while running errands.
Carjackings are up nationwide. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says beginning in June 2020, the United States experienced a 13% increase in auto thefts. And in Minneapolis, there have been 540 this year — five times the amount in 2019.
The busiest shopping season is underway, and at Mall of America, shoppers are heading into the season with joy, but also with caution.
Maria Dockendorf and Tessia Gebherd have been friends since they were sophomores in high school. Now college students, they met up at Mall of America for a shopping reunion. They both say they keep safety in mind.
“I usually lock my car all the time, like double check, make sure it honks and stuff,” Gebherd said.

Safety experts say after shopping, go straight to your car while looking at surroundings. Once you get inside, don’t sit and scroll on your phone. Lock the doors and get moving.
The Richfield Police Department offers this simple tip: Keep car keys and house keys on separate rings, so even if someone gets your car, they can’t get in your house.
Police all over the metro say the number-one reason cars are stolen is people leave keys in the car for convenience.
Two other carjacking safety tips from police: At red lights, leave a car space ahead of you in case you need to accelerate fast.
And don’t resist if someone tries to take your car. Your life is not worth it. (emphasis added)

Thou shalt not steal.
Good rule. Crying shame it only applies to the WASP community in modern America
I partially agree with the author. If carjacked with a gun in your face, surrender your car and keys.
When they go to drive away and are distracted, pull your pistol and shoot them in the back of the head. (This is legal where I live; check your local laws first.) Failing that, shoot to disable your own car. You did remember to bring your pistol, right? :P
There is no such thing as a safe area.
Don’t ask me how I know unless you have a lot of time.
That will just anger them and they will kill you on the spot.
I suspect rather that someone was attempting to "downplay" the situation.
Or perhaps the equivocation is attributable merely to the general "dumbing-down" of society.
Regards,
Try to draw from appendix carry while buckled up in a car. May not work the way you’d want.
Thanks,. Made me laugh!
Excellent point. Just as with “robbery” vs. “burglary” these “experts” must see the distinction ... yet they draw the equivocation. Well done!
And if you’re armed, the car jacker’s life is not worth jacking your car.
FYI. Carjacking is actually a federal crime now.
Car theft is another example how not prosecuting crime under $1000 results in chaos. This is the opposite of the “broken window” policy Rudy used to make NY, NY a livable place.
“They won’t carjack my 82 Rabbit”
As I understand it a standard shift transmission is now an effective theft detereent.
Apparently criminals are so dumb these days many don’t know how to use a clutch.
It’s not not even a question of ‘entirely’ - recent stats have shown that miscreants are often using the mobility of modern society and traveling to rich areas to commit crimes. Seems some have figured out that committing crimes against people who know you by face and name might not be the brightest idea.
Lock the door?? Inside basically a glass box that’s not gonna work out.
Suspects will deliberately rear-end other vehicles and low speeds and then wait for the potential victim to leave the vehicle. Suspects will approach the victim and then rob them at gunpoint, police said. If you are faced with this situation, police advise you remain in the vehicle with the doors locked and then call 911 immediately. If possible, you are asked to leave location for a public place or police station.
A potential bait and switch scheme where suspects might ask for a car jack, then display a firearm, or feigning a flat tire to attract attention. In this case, suspects are hoping a potential victim will get out of the vehicle to offer help and then robbing the victim, potentially at gunpoint.
Suspects will follow potential victims to their home or other spots and will wait for the victim to leave the vehicle. Suspects will then rob the victim at gunpoint. People are asked to “pay close attention to your surroundings. If you feel you are being followed or feel there is a potential threat in your vicinity, you should consider driving to a public area or police station rather than to your home,” police said. You asked to remain in the locked vehicle and call 911.

I had read about the low speed “crash” used also to kidnap and rape women.
Rott male is in charge of security...all 80 pounds of him
No, their life isn't worth my car. I'll be keeping my car. If someone wants to threaten my life to try to get it, well, what happens next is on them.
My cars are vaccinated so no worries there.
Always have a friend with you too, like Mr.Smith Wesson or Bob Berretta. Practice shaking hands with them with your right hand too. “Gimme your ride mofo”
BANG !! Surprise you ain’t get’in it.
“And if you with a woman and they try to take more than just your car?”
It’s not so much about taking your property. It’s about humiliating you so they can feel superior. In the olden days when theft was about just taking your money, the unspoken pact was if you give up your purse (you can guess how old this pact was) then you didn’t get stabbed with a sword. The phrase, hilariously coopted by a Democratic politician for a tax proposal, was, “Stand and deliver.”
I’m upgrading from a pocket carry to an ankle holster. Much easier to access when every moment counts.
If everyone left a car length between their car and the one in front then few people would be able to get in the left turn lane. This could lead to frustration and road rage
