By the time the exercise ended, I saw two very different reactions. Our DI said, “I would give my left nut to take you guys into combat.” The lieutenant colonel was in a fog, muttering, “Somewhere in that unit, there’s an evil mind.”

LOL

“Could not check building. Was repelled by skunk commandos who had it locked down tight.”

OMG too funny.

Life aboard a sub in the 60s must have been hard.

“Life aboard a sub in the 60s must have been hard.”

It may have been for some people. I treated it as an adventure. ;-)

“CIC”

Combat Information Center. The place where all decisions to attack when, where, who, what type of attack to use, etc. When you see movies about these big, clear glass/plastic boards with positions of ships, etc. are and there are men plotting things on the big, glass boards.....those boards are in the CIC.

Ok. For awhile I was doing research on his service while he was on the Missouri.

It said his name and then CX

I found out through a navy friend that it was a special classification during WW2.

Chief-navy reserve with a special classification. That is what the “X” was for..I understand.

About the only other thing he talked about is that he had something to do with the catapult plane on ship.

On my first overseas deployment my ship pulled into Pearl Harbor. We were granted a 72 hour liberty so my buddies and I got a room at a Waikiki hotel. Two of them went on a beer run, another was on the phone calling home and I was on the balcony eating Doritos. A pigeon landed on the railing and looked longingly at my Doritos. Taking pity on the poor starving thing, I tossed a Dorito to the deck. Instantly the air was filled with the roar of dozens of flapping wings as a cloud of pigeons descended on my balcony. I was literally shin deep in pigeons. I opened the sliding door and backed into the room. Some of the pigeons followed. I tossed some Doritos to the floor and more pigeons came into the room.

At this time an idea entered my brain and I decided to see how far I could take this. I backed across the room leaving a trail of Doritos. The pigeons followed. I opened the door and entered the hall. The pigeons followed. I backed down the hall leaving a trail of Doritos. Still the pigeons followed. Reaching the elevator I pressed the down button. When the door opened I tossed a handful of Doritos inside and some of the pigeons went in after them. I reached in and pressed the lobby button, the doors closed and the pigeons were on their way to the lobby. By this time the pigeons in the hall had started to panic and were flying up and down the hall. I retreated back to my room, closed the door and chased the remaining pigeons in the room out the balcony door.

By this time there was quite a commotion out in the hall as the hotel staff had discovered the panicked pigeons in the hall and were trying to chase them out of a window. My buddy had finished his phone call and the others returned with the beer, and they were laughing their butts off. They said that they were waiting for the elevator in the lobby and when the door opened a flock of pigeons flew out, causing a minor panic. We had a good laugh about Tbis as we drank the beer. When we checked out two days later, there still pigeons in the lobby rafters.

Oh Beachn.

I have not reviewed my FR Pings in years. I won’t be doing so again soon. I am stubborn like that.

If it ain't in my FR Mail then I mostly do not see it. I saw this stuff though because the subject matter intrigued me greatly.

I offered to design new threads for the Canteen several months ago. It is clear that I am not welcome to do so. I am not offended by that, but I honestly do not understand exactly just why my offer was essentially ignored.

It is alright with me as the offer is retracted. I won't soon again be posting new threads, on Pancakes or anything, on any forum.

I hope that you are doing well. You are a treasure.

And then some... I bet Bill Gates with all his billions was never rocked in his crib to sleep by a $50 million Chinook helicopter overing 1-200 ft above his tent... best feeling ever of peace.

I never so slept so worse and so best as in the military. This was the best.

OMG! I did not know this. Sorry to hear it. And when we desperately need extra hands.
