God Heals Our Brokenness

Read: Ephesians 2:1–10

By grace you have been saved, through faith. Ephesians 2:8

Collin and his wife, Jordan, wandered through the craft store, looking for a picture to hang in their home. Collin thought he’d found just the right piece and called Jordan over to see it. On the right side of the ceramic artwork was the word grace. But the left side held two long cracks. “Well, it’s broken!” Jordan said as she started looking for an unbroken one on the shelf. But then Collin said, “No. That’s the point. We’re broken and then grace comes in—period.” They decided to purchase the one with the cracks. When they got to the checkout, the clerk exclaimed, “Oh, no, it’s broken!” “Yes, so are we,” Jordan whispered.

What does it mean to be a “broken” person? Someone defined it this way: A growing awareness that no matter how hard we try, our ability to make life work gets worse instead of better. It’s a recognition of our need for God and His intervention in our lives.

The apostle Paul talked about our brokenness in terms of being “dead in [our] transgressions and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). The answer to our need to be forgiven and changed comes in verses 4 and 5: “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive . . . . [It] is by grace [we] have been saved.”

God is willing to heal our brokenness with His grace when we admit, “I’m broken.” — Anne Cetas

What brought you to your need to ask God to heal your brokenness? How do you need Him today?

God, thank You for being rich in mercy toward me! May I boast in You and Your gift of salvation through grace by faith.

He was a pro, I was a street fighter. Neither won but he was shocked he couldn’t pin me.

A sniper in the DMZ missed 2 extractions so they sent a boat to pick him up in the middle of the night. They went flying down the river and hit a sandbar and got stuck and had to wait for morning. They heard things rustling in the jungle and opened fire. They noticed no return fire so they quit shooting. In the morning the officer in charge went into the jungle to see what happened. They had shot and killed a troop of monkies.

Hello Veterans, wherever you are!!

One of my Uncles on the USS Missouri during ww2 when they went through a typhoon. He had about 15 years in by then and every dam man on the ship was sick and scared nearly to death.

Then, when they entered the harbor for the surrender, every one of them were tight a*s and jumpy.

CX was his rank.

My father was a WWII vet, serving at the tail end of the war. I wrote a tribute to him that was published in my local paper. In it I related one of his favorite stories:

As memories of those days gone by come to mind, you can almost hear his voice, while you picture the scene: He was at his battle station, just below the flight deck of the USS Boxer, somewhere in the Philippine Sea. The plane overshot the deck, landing in the ocean, flat on its belly. The pilot slid the canopy back, inflated the life raft, dropping it into the water, then slowly lit a cigarette and took a long drag. As the plane began to sink, he stepped out of the cockpit and into the raft.

“Never even got his feet wet” was always the punchline.

Finally, hump day is over. My week has been horrible, but everybody got paid today.

Hope your week has gone well. Have the mixers gone to their new homes?

Unlike many,many guys my age my time in the Armed Forces was quite uneventful.My two strongest memories are 1) during BCT at Fort Knox (the "Home of Armor" in '69) there were barracks about 50 feet from us where Marines who were training for an Armor MOS were billeted. Whenever we'd see them they give us $hit.

And 2) when assigned to Cutler Army Hospital (Fort Devens,Massachusetts) a bird Colonel was brought in,by helicopter,from the Natick Labs (an Army research facility in Massachusetts) after the new parachute he was testing failed to open. He was taken straight to Pathology.

Was on a WWII reunion trip to Luxembourg, France and Germany with my father who served under Patton. We were at a dinner at which Patton’s granddaughter spoke. She was very good, and at the end she brought up the famous prayer that Patton ordered his Chaplain write asking God to stop the rain. She announced that she had brought copies of the cards for everyone. She went around to each table handing out a replica of the little card the men were all given. When she got to Dad, he stood, pulled out his wallet and handed her his original card that he had laminated and kept in his wallet for 60 years. She stood there speechless, completely flabbergasted. It was quite the scene. The Outfit was F company, Brave Rifles.

I was reloading with missiles a helicopter pad storage in the desert. Then me and my buddy take off with remaining missiles in the “Gator” to fill another helo pad. After 20 seconds driving we somehow both look back where we were only to see an enemy rocket landing and blowing up the very ammo point we had replenished with a huge kaboom. Had we lingered them joking some more a few seconds and we would have been dead.

A less glorious story is when my buddy who was known to be a prankster decided to upset my NCO and night squad leader by hitting him in the head with a huge dildo because he was slow getting up his bed. The NCO ran after him and caught him before he could get out the tent, disarmed him of the dildo and proceeded to hold him on the ground and beat his head with said dildo, only for the first sergeant to come in with a couple Afghan pest control workers to do a tent inspection right at the same time, walking up to that scene. The first sergent used to scream at everything this prankster would do but could not suppress absolute laughter with the two Afghan workers seeing him this time getting smacked around with this ugly rubber stick.
