Jon Gruden Sues NFL, Roger Goodell for Forcing His Resignation

Jon Gruden is done coaching in the NFL, but he is not done with the NFL.

The Raiders coach who resigned after it was discovered he used racial and misogynistic language in emails with former Washington Football Team General Manager Bruce Allen sued the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell for orchestrating the “selective leaking” of the emails that led to his resignation.

“Jon Gruden has filed suit against the National Football League and Commissioner Goodell in the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada,” Adam Hosmer-Henner, Gruden’s attorney, wrote. “The complaint alleges that the defendants selectively leaked Gruden’s private correspondence to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times in order to harm Gruden’s reputation and force him out of his job.

“There is no explanation or justification for why Gruden’s emails were the only ones made public out of the 650,000 emails collected in the NFL’s investigation of the Washington Football Team.”

For their part, the NFL denies Gruden’s allegations.

“The allegations are entirely meritless and the NFL will vigorously defend against these claims,” the NFL said in a statement.

Gruden sent the emails while he was serving as a Monday Night Football analyst for ESPN. The emails were collected and analyzed along with 650,000 other emails as part of the investigation into the Washington Football Team’s workplace culture. The NFL has declined to release all of the emails.

In one of the emails, Gruden said that NFL Players Association President DeMaurice Smith, who is black, had lips the size of “michellin tires.” In another email exchange, Gruden commented on a meme showing a female referee by saying, “nice job roger.”

Gruden resigned soon after the release of the emails, saying that he did not want to become a “distraction” for the Raiders.

I think he would have been far more effective by NOT resigning.

I also don’t understand why these guys who end up with difficult-to-defend positions, why they don’t just buy a quick GoDaddy website. They can put all their defensive stuff up on that website and when they get asked about it, say that it’s all up on http://www.MediaCanKissMyAss.com or whatever URL they buy.

He got really bad advice when he agreed to resign and allowed himself to be “cancelled”. You only win when you fight hard from the beginning of the assault. You already lost and are on the defensive when you seek justice from some biased judge.

And THAT is the problem. Some knucklehead at the League office selectively leaked Gruden’s emails. They either were working at the direction of the Commissioner, or were using their position to work out a grudge against Gruden. Either way the League pays.

I was in the middle of a legal dispute with my landlord, who was committing violent crimes against me. So I followed my own advice, posting video of the crimes on my website.

The judge ordered me not to post on that website while the restraining order and stipulation order was in place. I had no idea that judges have this much power over our first amendment rights to freedom of speech and press. But the order was so specific that I could have just opened a second website and started posting there...

Once you resign it weakens your case. Make them fire you and then sue for wrongful termination.

Gruden's beef isn't with the team that employed him. It is with the League itself which does not employ him.

I imagine the NFL referee mafia will make the Raiders pay for this insurrection. They have more power than you think. Look at the recent Steeler/Bears game.

Gruden deserves a nine-figure settlement.

***Why would the referees care one way or the other?

***Why would the referees care one way or the other?

Because they are an "arm" of the league. They are not independent even though they try to create that illusion. Also, that's why the NFL (and other sports leagues) are not classified as a "gaming" entity but an "entertainment" entity. That way the rules governing their behavior and treatment of "games" are much more lax. For example, that's why you see a much different treatment of say a Jalen Hurts/any other rookie QB vs. a Ben Roethlisberger or Tom Brady or Drew Brees. When you see seemingly odd "bad calls" that affect a game (like the blatantly obvious PI in that NFC championship game a couple years ago) you scratch your head and say "how can that happen". I submit that SOMETIMES "the league" wants a certain outcome and the referees are one way of getting that outcome. Remember, it is an entertainment franchise, not a gaming franchise.

This just my humble opinion and I've seen enough BS calls that are real head scratchers.

Racial language is comparing the size of someone’s lips to an automobile tire?

So I read a sportswriter explain that statement. Unbeknownst to me, someone that lies through their teeth is sometimes called "rubber lips". Well, apparently Gruden took that to the biggest extreme he could think of and used the Michelin reference. Not sure if that is BS or not?

Did he get any money from his contract even though he resigned? There had to have been some sort of deal. Just ask in’

I really don't know any details other than I'm guessing his contract was structured on a "per year" pay scale totaling $100m over 10 years IIRC. I thought I also saw there was some sort of settlement from the team (not the league) when he resigned.
