Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry.

While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division

Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951

Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H.

G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952

Citation:

Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Let Me Stay!
Read: Psalm 27:1–6

One thing I ask from the Lord . . . that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Psalm 27:4

As they made their way toward their car, Zander escaped his mother’s arms and made a mad dash back toward the church doors. He didn’t want to leave! His mom ran after him and tried to lovingly wrangle her son so they could depart. When his mother finally scooped four-year-old Zander back into her embrace, he sobbed and reached longingly over her shoulder toward the church as they walked away.

Zander may merely have enjoyed playing with friends at church, but his enthusiasm is a picture of David’s desire to worship God. Though he might have asked God to thwart his enemies for his own comfort and security, David wanted peace to prevail so that he could instead “gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). His heart’s desire was to be with God—wherever He was—and to enjoy His presence. Israel’s greatest king and military hero intended to use peacetime to “sing and make music to the Lord” (v. 6).

We can freely worship God anywhere, for He now dwells within us through faith in the person of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 3:17). May we yearn to spend our days in His presence and to gather corporately to worship Him with other believers. In God we find our safety and our greatest joy.Kirsten Holmberg

When have you experienced a passionate yearning to worship God? What keeps you from experiencing that more frequently?

Father, You’re my delight and my joy. I long to worship You without distraction or interruption.

Read “Pure Worship.”

Bible in a year: Ezekiel 1–2; Hebrews 11:1–19

Good evening, Pro...leaf mowing complete?

Done here...any of them left are under 20” of snow. Now it’s just plain cold. Headed for zero tonight or tomorrow and then minus numbers for the rest of the week.

Hey Kathy, cleaned out gutters today and son was raking up the gathered leaf piles, they’re almost all gone. We had a bonus 70 degree day today, back to cooler this week.

my wife’s Portuguese uncle was a fearless rifleman in the pacific WWII, my dad may have seen action with him. decorated and a devout Catholic to boot.

i guess, like Texas, you don’t mess with the Portuguese, either. they can go hot on you.

Hiya radu!

Good weekend here, Saturday is reserved for college football, the only sport I watch anymore and today was a lazy morning and then gutter cleaning at Robin's.

How was your weekend?

Good evening, radu...all rested now? Has harvesting around you been completed yet? Can you breathe again?

Weird weather today...fog and sun and low skies and then beautuful blue skies and cold....headed to zero and below the next few days. Sure glad we have a blanket of snow for our pipes.
