China now has the world's largest navy and is preparing to launch a new high-tech aircraft carrier by February, the Pentagon has revealed.

Beijing has 'numerically the largest navy in the world with an overall battle force of approximately 355 ships and submarines,' the Defense Department said last Wednesday in its annual report on China.

That compares with 296 warships at the US Navy's disposal, 69 vessels operated by the Royal Navy and 295 boats deployed by the Russian Navy.

“Largest Navy” is a misdirection. The USA still fields far more deep water combat capable warships. A huge component of the PLAN is coastal patrol boats.

In WWII, Germany went to great lengths to deceive the rest of the world into thinking their might was greater than it was. That enabled them to make moves with relative impunity knowing the countries that might have fought back when Germany was still in the building phase didn't do so because they were psychologically cowed.

Under Eisenhower the USA started building the Interstate Highway system and 5 years later when he left office over 10,000 miles of highway were built and in use. Times change. Environmental rules, union rules, OSHA regulations, lots of things make shipbuilding slower and that's before you factor in the added far greater complexity of the combat systems on USN ships today compared to WW2 or even the 1980s. I was at a shipyard in California and they basically told me that there was almost no shipbuilding on the west coast anymore because of the environmental regulations imposed by California which were so bad that you can't make a profit. So there are far fewer builders now on top of everything else.

Long and short of it, if we get into a competition with China over who can build more ships faster I am pretty confident they will crush us. In the '60s we'd win in a laugher. Today, well, nope.
