WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has created a new requirement for automakers: Find a high-tech way to keep drunken people from driving cars.

It’s one of the mandates along with a burst of new spending aimed at improving auto safety amid escalating road fatalities in the $1 trillion infrastructure package that President Joe Biden is expected to sign soon.

Under the legislation, monitoring systems to stop intoxicated drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, after the Transportation Department assesses the best form of technology to install in millions of vehicles and automakers are given time to comply.

In all, about $17 billion is allotted to road safety programs, the biggest increase in such funding in decades, according to the Eno Center for Transportation. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says that could mean more protected bike paths and greener spaces built into busy roadways.

People will find workarounds.

Waste of money.

I am against drunk driving.
I am against drunk spending.

Whatever ‘technology’ it is, it will either be easily defeatable, even for drunk people, or it will provide false positives and lock people out of their own vehicles.

Considering both outcomes will result in lawsuits against the automakers, I would expect car prices to go up significantly to compensate

I drive crappy when I have a bad day. They need bad day technology. And then there’s Friday....when everyone seems to engage in road rage...We need RR Friday technology.

Obviously we need to punish sober drivers and restrict their freedoms because illegal aliens and known felons are allowed to drive drunk.

Great, now people who have never tasted of alcohol in their life will now be forced to undergo a type of sobriety test before being able to start the engine. This should work about as good as decreasing the tank size to 1.8 gallons per flush on a water closet!

“What if they banned all alcohol completely; oh, wait, never mind.”

We have the technology now to enforce a ban. Random testing at work and school. You fail, re-education, you fail again, go to jail.

There are a lot more deaths caused by alcohol than by guns.

Exactly, maybe we need technology to keep Hillary from drunken surfing on an illegal server.
