Bill Gates has warned that governments must prepare for future pandemics and smallpox terror attacks by investing billions in research and development.
Mr Gates made the warning during a Policy Exchange interview with the chair of the Health Select Committee Jeremy Hunt.
The Microsoft founder also called for the formation of a new billion-dollar World Health Organisation Pandemic Task Force.
While the research may be expensive, he said that it could also lead to other innovations, such as eradicating flu and the common cold.
He said that countries like the US and the UK must spend “tens of billions” to fund the research.
“I’m hoping in five years, I can write a book called, ‘We ARE ready for the next pandemic’, but it’ll take tens of billions in R&D – the US and the UK will be part of that”, he said.
“It’ll take probably about a billion a year for a pandemic Task Force at the WHO level, which is doing the surveillance and actually doing what I call ‘germ games’ where you practise.”
Mr Gates suggested that the “germ-games” could include preparing for acts of bioterrorism such as smallpox attacks on airports.
“You say, OK, what if a bioterrorist brought smallpox to 10 airports? You know, how would the world respond to that? There’s naturally-caused epidemics and bioterrorism-caused epidemics that could even be way worse than what we experienced today”, he said.

Why do I think that all of a sudden, CDC will find 10 cases...and we'll all have to be re-vaccinated.
Most of the folks around here have been given THAT shot already.
I don't know the demographics of Freereublic, but I would guess that most people here have not had the smallpox vaccine.
They stopped mass smallpox vaccinations in 1970 or so. That means most everyone born since about 1963 is not vaccinated. The exception is some military who were in Iraq, some DOD civilians, and any high risk people.
So, smallpox might be an excellent choice for a mass depopulation scheme where the elite could protect themselves.
How long since routine smallpox vaccinations were given to everyone? There must be millions of Americans unprotected.

It was declared eradicated globally in 1980.
I was born on 1964, and was vaccinated. Everyone in my immediate family was vaccinated, AFAIK, including a relative vorn in 1970 or so.

I have often wondered if some nation will release the variola virus back onto the public as most of the world has never been vaccinated for smallpox.
Us old timers still remember it and the inoculation.
No doubt someone will bring up “smallpox blankets” in the 1760s. Remember at that time no one knew how smallpox was spread. It was believed epidemics came from “Bad Air (misama)”, the Evil Eye and a Witch hex.
By the 1800s it was beginning to be understood.

They didn’t stop giving it everywhere at the same time. A lot depends on the state you were in.
By 1980 smallpox was declared eradicated and by then vaccination had stopped completely.
