Great Lakes 'have a fever' as first lake-effect snow sets a record
Accuweather ^ | November 4, 2021 | Jesse Ferrell

Posted on 11/04/2021 8:58:46 AM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

The first significant lake-effect snow of the season dropped nearly a foot of snow near the shores of the Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday. The snowfall was enough to transform parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula into a winter wonderland and break into the record books at one weather station in Michigan.

Snow totals topped 11 inches in northern parts of northern Michigan. Gaylord, Michigan, picked up 11.7 inches of snow on Tuesday, which set a record for the heaviest snowfall in a calendar day in November. That amount also ranked as the sixth highest single-day snowfall in any month. Records have been kept at the National Weather Service (NWS) office there since 1998. Into Wednesday, temperatures remained in the low to mid-30s in Gaylord, as snow flurries continued to fall. The average high temperature there at this time of year is 47 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperatures couldn't make it above the mid-30s Tuesday and Wednesday, though the area was poised for a rebound in the days ahead, according to the AccuWeather forecast.

This is just the beginning of what could be a blockbuster lake-effect snow season, according to AccuWeather forecasters. With few cold outbreaks in October, each of the Great Lakes has a fever, so to speak. With water temperatures several degrees above normal, most of the lakes have set new records for this time of year according to NOAA CoastWatch, which maintains records back to 1995.

Those guys meeting in Scotland are doing a fantastic, bang-up job lowering the earth's temperature!

Remember Rush's Al Gore “armageddon” clock? In January, 2006 — when promoting his "Oscar-winning" documentary, An Inconvenient Truth — Gore declared that unless we took “drastic measures” to reduce greenhouse gasses, the world would reach a “point of no return” in a mere ten years. He called it a “true planetary emergency.” Well, here we are, five years past Gore's "point of no return" and we are continuing to set snowfall and low temperature records.

How can that possibly be?

Of course.

It’s been a ridiculously warm fall and the lakes have not had the chance to cool off as they usually do.

A lot more areas are going to be seeing lots of lake effect than just Michigan. Western and Central NYers need to be ready to get nailed.

Glad we moved.

To the keyword cowards who keyworded this article with *kooks*, learn something about the weather before making ignorant comments.

Very warm Great Lakes translate into lots of lake effect. Always.

Southern New England has had a very warm autumn, grass still vibrant green, a lot of trees with green leaves. But it’s like somebody flipped a switch on November 1st, been cold with heavy frosts all week. Had a big storm blow the leaves off most of the trees that were just starting to turn.

Tell me this is their idea of a joke, right?? 25 years is not even a neuron flash for a blink of an eye as far as weather patterns are concerned in terms of those lakes, and it's the 6th(!!) highest in that little amount of time? Someone is trying to ride the globull warming summit for clicks I think.

We live in NH and have seen the hard freezes with a few more to come this week.

Then the forecast is back up into the fifties.

Here is their answer. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/11/031106052121.htm

A team of researchers, led by Colgate Associate Professor of Geography Adam Burnett, published the study, “Increasing Great Lake-Effect Snowfall during the Twentieth Century: A Regional Response to Global Warming?” in the November issue of the Journal of Climate.

Syracuse, NY, one of the snowiest cities in the U.S., experienced four of its largest snowfalls on record in the 1990s – the warmest decade in the 20th century, as a result of global warming.

“Recent increases in the water temperature of the Great Lakes are consistent with global warming,” said Burnett. “Such increases widen the gap between water temperature and air temperature – the ideal condition for snowfall.”

The research team compared snowfall records from fifteen weather stations within the Great Lakes region with ten stations at sites outside of the region. Records dating back to 1931 were available for eight of the lake-effect and six of the non-lake-effect areas. Records for the rest of the sample date back to 1950.

“We found a statistically significant increase in snowfall in the lake-effect region since 1931, but no such increase in the non-lake-effect area during the same period,” said Burnett. “This leads us to believe that recent increases in lake-effect snowfall are not the result of changes in regional weather disturbances.”

“kooks” refers to the global warming kooks who say we have 9.4 years to go...which Gore said 15 years ago. It refers to the Dem pols who have been arguing for 40 years that we need higher energy prices and, as soon as they climb 33%, they are wringing their hands on how to reduce energy prices. It refers to Biden canceling scores of energy projects and begging OPEC for more oil

They are all KOOKS.

We’re still mowing our lawn.

Each time it’s been, “One more mowing”.

I hope so.

OTOH, it beats plowing and shoveling.

That’s pretty much the pattern here in North Idaho. October was gorgeous with really intense colors. Then WHUMP down came all the leaves, temps dropped and the rains started just about November 1.

It does make sense that warmer water will increase lake effect snow, that mist rising off the warm water when it hits cold air is all it takes, and the warmer the water the more gets vaporized and condenses into snow.

Shoveled the crap for many years, glad I’m over that now.
