If one terrible thing happens with a gun, gun control activists reflexively call for bans or other new regulations. There is rarely a consideration of costs and benefits. Actor Alec Baldwin has demonstrated this thinking again after the accidental fatal shooting on the set of his movie in New Mexico.
"[H]ow many bullets were fired in movies and TV shows over the last 75 years?" he said on Saturday. "… Billions? In the last 75 years? And nearly all of them without incident. ... Some new measures have to take place. ... No live ammunition. No real weapons in the set."
Baldwin is right about how rare these accidental deaths are. Before he shot and killed Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie "Rust," Brandon Lee's death in 1993 was the last recorded death by a gun on a movie set (he was filming "The Crow"). As with Hutchins’ death, the gun fired a real bullet. Before that, there was actor Jon-Erik Hexum's death in 1984. While waiting between takes, Hexum put a gun to his temple and shot himself with a blank. He didn't understand that blanks contain explosives, and the force of the explosion can kill at very short range.

But going back at least 50 years, the deaths of Hutchins and Lee were the only two involving live ammunition.

“Treat all guns as if they are loaded and deadly.”
“Never point a firearm at anyone including yourself. Always cheat the shot by aiming to the right or left of the target character.”
“Check the firearm every time you take possession of it.”
“Live ammunition may not be brought into the theatre.””

Alec sweety? You were free as both star actor and executive producer to use a fake gun with no ammo. You passed that up in favor of murdering this young woman. But now you want to prevent other people from operating safely.

Well, there was the one that killed Brandon Lee, which was an improperly fabricated dummy cartridge where the armorer removed the powder from a real cartridge, but retained the primer, so that when it was fired the bullet had just enough energy to lodge into the barrel of the gun. Later, when a full power blank was fired, that was more than enough energy to fire the lodged bullet into Brandon Lee.
Then there was the bullet you fired on the set of "Rust."

Alec Baldwin killed this woman because he was sloppy and too lazy to check the gun before playing with it. It’s that simple. No amount of rhetoric from him can change that one iota.
