“Those are the facts. Laid out well.”
Except the city of Inglewood (the Rams don’t play in Los Angeles) gave up very little in terms of tax breaks and incentives to lure the team back to Southern California. It was purely the greater potential of a location in a much bigger market.
Meanwhile the city of Saint Louis still owes $100 million dollars in bond debt left over from getting the Rams in 1994. On the way out, Harold Hill thanked the taxpayers for their support.
Virtue signaling is 24/7/365.
The implied threat of destroying business by leaving is strong-arm extortion. 'Nice economy you got there. Be a shame if we left'.
And when the whole NFL is involved it's called racketeering. It's no different from the Mafia only it has the facade of respectable business negotiations.
Paul Tagliabue gone since 2006! I swear time really does fly.
I won’t watch anymore, but a lot of NFL is on broadcast TV, not cable.
You forgot cinematography ...
His base pay is just $6.4 million a year.
Sounds to me like he operates as a full time agent rather than as an employee.
Most likely he gets a certain percentage for every new source of NFL income, and for increasing payments from the TV networks and other NFL legacy partners.
Most of the team owners are geriatrics, but many are self made billionaires.
None of them got rich by wasting their money.
A thousand apologies. Yes, cinematography as well.
There’s no implied threat. There’s no extortion. They want a better stadium, and they know some city will be willing to pay for it, so they enter into negotiations. Every single major business on the planet does that. It’s not extortion, it’s not racketeering. It’s smart. If City A wants to spend billions of dollars making you happy it’s smart to consider it. And letting where you are know there are suitors is actually polite. They could just leave. Like the Colts did. Got a better offer and just split.
It’s vastly different than the mafia does. Nobody is getting beat up of shot. It’s just smart business. Toyota, Ford, Motorola, IBM etc etc. EVERYBODY does this. If you’re a multi billion company some city is willing to whore themselves out for you. Don’t blame the business. Blame the cities. They’re whores who are constantly sending offer to tons of businesses. You want this to stop, stop the whores.
In the case of the Rams move it was St Louis not upholding their contract. I actually think it’s pretty funny they’re suing. The contract said they had to keep the stadium in the top quarter of the league according to some arbitrator that decides these things. And it wasn’t. And the Rams gave them a grace period. And they still didn’t improve it. So they left.
Inglewood might not have given much. But St Louis was giving nothing.
And the opioid of the people runs merrily along....unabated.
It’s a business. These teams are owned by very rich people. You don’t get to be that rich allowing sentimentality to cost you money.
Was Boeing a part of the community? And yet they got a better deal elsewhere. They’re a part of the community, until they’re not. It’s business.
The taxpayers on St Louis absolutely got bent over. You’re ignoring all the perks the city gave the Rams back in ‘94.
Bonuses? With less attendance and TV ad revenue?
I could use a job like that.

Boeing doesn’t depend on a major percentage of its income coming from customers buying Boeing merchandise every year
sports teams do ... and that can change in a heartbeat if the fans feel that the team ownership doesn’t care
They got bent over. But they got bent over by their own government. The government signed the deal that if ever that stadium wasn’t considered to be in the top 25% the Rams were free to leave. And the government didn’t do what was necessary to keep it in the top 25%. And then that government acted shocked when the Rams waved bye bye.
Toyota. IBM. There’s a long list of companies that took the better deal. And they’re ALL currently shopping for better deals. Because they’re constantly being offered deals. And if they’re not considering those deals and weighing the costs and benefits they’re idiots.
Anybody that pays attention to free agency, and coaching moves, and GM moves and that “off field” stuff knows that their favorite team is still a BUSINESS. Just like their favorite soda, beer, cheese, whatever. I buy stuff at the merch table every time I see a band live. Why? Cause I know it’s a business and if the band makes money here they’re likely to come back.
