Report: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell paid nearly $128 million over 2 years

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was paid nearly $128 million over the past two years through his salary, bonuses and other benefits, according to The New York Times.

That figure, per the report, was discussed at the league-wide owners meeting in New York earlier this week. About 90% of Goodell’s pay over the past two years came from bonuses alone, four sources told The New York Times — which was so large “because he had helped secure such favorable labor and media deals.”

Specifically, Goodell was paid $63,900,050 each year — which totals up to $127.8 million. That, per The New York Times, makes him one of the top-five paid CEOs in the world.

Over the past two years under Goodell, NFL players narrowly passed a new collective bargaining agreement and the league expanded its schedule to 17 regular season games. The NFL also announced several new television and media deals through 2033 that are reportedly worth more than $100 million.

Goodell has received criticism in recent weeks over his handling of the NFL’s investigation into the Washington Football Team’s reported misconduct. He said Tuesday that he will not release a report on the investigation the NFL conducted, but that he believes Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder was “held accountable.”

Goodell replaced commissioner Paul Tagliabue in 2006, and signed a five-year extension in 2017 worth up to $200 million, per the report. The league paid him almost $32 million in 2015, according to ESPN, which was the final year the NFL published those records. He asked the committee not to pay him a salary in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fine. If they’re dumb enough to pay him why shouldn’t he take it?

They missed their opportunity when Condi was unemployed after 2008. She wood kept the players in line as well as the art crap in its place.

What a scammer! The NFL owners can easily find someone better @10 million per year. This a-hole is the son of a liberal US Senator, from PA I think it was.

All this nonsense where NFL owners don’t care who runs the show, all this comes from their very high-yield cable TV contracts. I canceled cable TV, so they (sportsball) don’t get a dime from me. I get news from the internet and currently have Netflix.

Network news on TV is way too hyper and excitable. This ramps up people’s emotions about Covid19 and similar. And leftist. Fox News is OK, but I can absorb news faster by reading on the internet. The UK Daily Mail is my #1 source. FRebublic too.

If the owners are willing to pay him that much to take the slings and arrows aimed at the NFL, imagine what they’ve done that he’s covering over.

The reason a family of four cannot afford to attend an NFL game in person.

This guy is is clueless.

Every single scandal that has hit the NFL since he started, he’s botched.

Yet that incompetence is rewarded with big money - because the TV revenues keep going up.

The keep going up because the product is good, not because of anything Goodell does.

NFL could have Bozo the Clown in charge, and they’d still make money

oh wait, they already do

All the TV contracts renewed, and they all went up. And they even got more. Doesn’t matter what you think of him, he keeps negotiating billion in TV rights. You give the guy who brings in $$$$$$$$$ $$$. That’s called capitalism.

Major league sports are a private business. They don't represent my city or me. I wish them neither good or bad but let them fund their own stadiums and arenas. This is an entertainment industry. Do we build sound stages for Hollywood films?

I'm tired of them announcing 'your stadium no longer meets the standards for the NFL' (meaning, we want better luxury boxes). 'If you don't we might leave' (this is called extortion and it's illegal).

If they want a new stadium let them pool their money and build them. Set-up a schedule to replace stadiums and they can pay for them and build them to their own standards.

It’s not extortion. It’s good business. Never pay for anything you don’t have to. Tons of businesses set cities against each other looking tax breaks and easements and cheap land for new factories. There no difference between the Rams move to LA, Boeing’s move to Chicago, and Amazon’s “search” for where to put HQ2. As long as cities are willing to offer “incentives” businesses will run bidding wars.
