Sometimes referred to as "assault weapons" or "military-style rifles," this class of firearm can encompass many different kinds of guns -- not just the more well-known rifles, such as the AK and AR-15 series weapons. The term "assault weapon" generally encompasses a wide range of models, including the UZI rifle and pistol, the Beretta AR-70, the SKS rifle and more, according to the California Attorney General's Assault Weapons Identification Guide.
AR-15 style rifles are rifles "modeled on the AR-15 platform and that fire the same caliber cartridges," Klarevas said, such as the Smith & Wesson M&P15 and the Ruger AR-556.
Along with their use in hunting, for some Americans, AR-15-type weapons also connote patriotism, which can be traced back to the M16 military rifle that became prominent during the Vietnam War, according to Garrett.
"It didn't hurt that Sylvester Stallone uses an assault-type weapon in 'Rambo,'" the 1982 film about a Vietnam veteran, Garrett said.
But in 1989, an AK-47 was used to kill five children at a Stockton, California, elementary school, leading California to become the first state to enact an assault weapons ban, Klarevas said. That was followed by two other high-profile mass shootings with semiautomatic pistols -- one in San Francisco and one on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train -- in 1993.
Those shootings were the impetus for the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, signed into effect by President Bill Clinton in 1994, stopping the manufacture, sale, transfer and possession of these types of firearms.

Including anything that is not capable of fully automatic fire in the “assault weapon” category is blatant misrepresentation and a bald-faced lie.
Balanced my butt. When the FIRST sentence has a falsehood, the entire article is untrustworthy and tainted.
A friend encouraged me to buy my first “assault rifle” when I was a sophomore in college back in the mid-60’s. The rifle, 30 round magazines, and ammo cost a bit over $80, but that was the cost of the books for a semester of college, so I passed it up. That was the cost of the M-1 carbine that the government was getting rid of since it had been re[placed by the M-2.
Let’s talk about the cultural significance of fire...
But first! Let’s hear from parents of a burned child.
This is what passes for journalism these days.
I glanced at the story on ABC, but didn’t have the stomach to delve into the comments.

“The federal ban was not renewed by Congress and expired in 2004. Gun massacre incidents involving these weapons then skyrocketed from 2004 to 2014, jumping 167% compared to the 10 years the federal law was in effect,”
The pre-9/11 90s was a booming economy and were not filled with SSRI addled kids in a bad economy. Also the Pulse, San Bernadino and Fort Hood were all acts of moslem terrorism.
The decade before was one of a booming economy in a fairly happy world and Bill Clinton’s damage had not had time to blossom. Schools were not homo and tranny recruitment centers and the military didn’t march around in red high heels.
The two time comparisons are defined FAR more by factors besides gun ownership.
increasing? unpossible...
You meant AR-14 didn’t you, Brandon? /s

And there are still more people beaten to death each year that deaths by “assault rifles”. So why are we even having a news story at all?
Because it is an artificial, made-up term. Other terms have real meaning - chain gun, machine gun, sniper rifle, big-game rifle, shotgun, etc. Assault rifle or assault weapon is intentionally nebulous so as to be able to legally snare as many firearms as possible while conjuring up negative imagery.
Of course the AR-15 style rifles are popular. They are (compared to many other rifles) very low recoil, cheap to shoot, modestly priced (wide range of price/quality/features), and are nearly infinitely customizable. Perhaps the only real downside is cleaning. The number of nooks and crannies (particularly in the bolt & bolt carrier group) make you question your life choices. A Glock pistol or 1911 style pistol is a joy to clean in comparison. :--)

A ban which expired after 10 years. Numerous statistical studies have concluded that the "assault weapons ban" actually had no impact on crime rates. Think about that. Something that we tried, and proved to ourselves does not work, does not reduce crime in any significant way. Why would anyone advocate to try it again? Certainly not to improve public safety - we've proven such measures do not in fact improve public safety.
What’s wrong with “Personal Defense Weapon”?
That’s what “they” call them. Right?
Being both a Viet and Cold War veteran, I have experience with the M16 with the selective fire switch that does NOT appear on AR-15 assemblages.
Today, for my personal tastes, I prefer lever action rifles built on Winchester designs. I prefer the 1892 design with the 18-ish inch barrel configuration in .357 Magnum. It is well-balanced, swings to the shoulder easily, and with standard pressure conical flat point bullet 158grain loads, can be shot all day without discomfort.
And yes, there are boneless who would call 1800’s Winchester lever action rifles “assault rifles of their times”. But remind the bonehead that MY ancestors, i.e., the Natiive Americans, also chose them as their rifles, in their defense of the homeland, too!
Until politicians know what they are talking about, they should not be allowed to speak. It would be a LOT quieter...
Except, they still haven't figured out what a real assault weapon is. They sound like honor roll students of the Alec Baldwin firearms training academy.
“cheap to shoot”
LOL!

Post-ban AR-15:
The real fact of the matter is that genuine mass shootings, which is when someone runs amok with a gun, are so rare that it's difficult to compile meaningful statistics. So the left and the media lump in gang-bangers spraying a crowd with "mass shootings" to bloat the numbers. Real mass shootings are almost impossible to stop. Ordinary multiple-victim shootings can quite easily be stopped by removing criminals from the street. The fact that they are not is simply evidence that Democrats refuse to prosecute criminals.
