MONDAY, Oct. 18, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- A common group of bacteria may be causing deadly pneumonia or anthrax-like disease among metalworkers in the southern United States, health officials report.
The bacteria, called Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), naturally occurs in soil and dust. B. cereus can cause food poisoning and anthrax-like disease, but why it singles out welders and other metalworkers is a mystery, according to researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Also a puzzle is why it has only been reported in Gulf Coast states.
"In the past, long-term exposure to welding and metalworking fumes has been associated with various forms of lung injury that can cause changes in lung function and increase susceptibility to lung infections, including fatal pneumonia," said senior researcher Dr. William Bower, a medical officer in the CDC's Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology.

Where does the steel come from? Wuhan?
Moderna or phizer will save us
You can’t B. cereus.........................
Maybe from all the folks walking into American from diseased ridden hell holes?
Nobody telling ‘em to “Wipe Your Feet” before entering
Gub’mint blew a good opportunity to blame these deaths on COVID.
I was a welder. I hit one piece of scrap that was galvanized with zinc. That put me our two weeks. Convinced me I am not going to be a welder anymore. Rough on the body.
More then likely from breathing grinding dust. Sometimes a face mask really does work.
Yep. Welders breathe in a lot of fumes and particles. A good mask would be a smart investment.
That or supplied air system like they use for painting with toxic paints.
I don’t weld much, just hobby stuff but for sure if you did it many hours a day it can’t be good to breathe.
So
W combination of dust, heat, poor/no PPE and a naturally occurring bacteria that is most likely on virtually everything in that hot wet environment.
“Welders breathe in a lot of fumes and particles. A good mask would be a smart investment.”
Try getting them to wear it in the summer when it’s 90+ degrees out in the shop.
We had a welder suddenly up & die over what began as a chest cold and went immediately to pneumonia and then ‘dead’ in the space of 10 days.
Gases, masks, or rods coming from the PRC?
I breathed a lot of grinding dust, working 40 yrs in machine shops. Most of what I did all that time was grinding. I have COPD now.
My Dad was an iron worker after WWII and eventually started up his own welding shop. Mom took care of the office, and Dad ran the shop. They did quite well for themselves. Dad never had any health issues from welding, except wrecking his hearing. Mine is shot, too.
I could’ve taken over the business, but no, I had to go off and “ do my own thing”. Biggest mistake I ever made.
Smells like anthrax is being packaged in supply boxes.
Sorry to hear that. I worked as a maintenance machinist at AB in STL. We were the last brewery in the US to use coal fired steam. I spent the last 14 years there working around the coal equipment. Two pulverizer boilers and two stoker feed boilers. I learned a lot about handling very heavy stuff in tight areas. We were very good (it’s not bragging if you can do it) “monkey swinging” heavy pieces. Into place using multiple hosts & come-a-longs. I used a face mask a lot because it works against coal dust. Viruses, I doubt it.
Need to study the proximity of these victims to 5ge radiators...
