~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Maine The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, often called the Portsmouth Navy Yard, is a United States Navy shipyard located in Kittery on the southern boundary of Maine near the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. PNS is tasked with the overhaul, repair, and modernization of US Navy submarines. Though PNS is nominally a public shipyard, several corporations (e.g., Delphinius Engineering of Eddystone, PA; Oceaneering International of Chesapeake, VA; Orbis Sibro of Mount Pleasant, SC; and Q.E.D. Systems Inc. of Virginia Beach, VA) carry out the submarine maintenance and upgrades there. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was established on June 12, 1800 during the administration of President John Adams, and is the U.S. Navy's oldest continuously operating shipyard. It sits on a cluster of conjoined islands called Seavey's Island in the Piscataqua River, whose swift tidal current prevents ice from blocking navigation to the Atlantic Ocean. The shipyard earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation in 2005. The MUC recognized the shipyard for meritorious service from September 11, 2001 to August 30, 2004. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard accomplishments achieved during that period included completion of six major submarine availabilities early, exceeding Net Operation Results financial goals, reducing injuries by more than 50 percent, and exceeding the Secretary of Defense's Fiscal Year 2006 Stretch Goal for lost workday compensation rates two years early.
In addition to the Navy presence, the United States Army New England Recruiting Battalion relocated to PNSY in June 2010 from the closed Brunswick Naval Air Station. The United States Coast Guard uses the Portsmouth Navy Yard as the home port for the medium-endurance cutters Reliance, Tahoma, and Campbell. PNS is undergoing substantial construction and infrastructure upgrades. In fiscal 2020, Navy contracts were issued to renovate the communications building, build a super flood basin and extend crane rails in Dry Dock 1, upgrade crane rails in Dry Dock 2, renovate Building 2, and implement sundry waterfront projects.
The summer of 2021 saw an uptick in construction contracts issued for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, including purchase and installation of three 12,000-gallon-per-minute dewatering pumps for the Dry Dock 1 extension, ongoing construction of the Dry Dock 2 complex, commencement of construction on the Virginia-class submarine waterfront support facility (Building 178), and a $1.73 billion contract for building a dry dock for maintenance and upgrade of Virginia-class submarines. Hey there, Kathy.
It was a much prettier day up there today. Mt. Denali was crystal clear in the distance and a cam op did a couple of great zooms in on it. Too bad clouds moved in to the east because the moon’s coming up. The cam op’s zoomed in a bit as it peeks through clouds but it isn’t clear. :-(
We have a dry week ahead except for a slight chance for rain Thursday. Farmers are out harvesting as fast as they can. Our cotton is edging closer to being ready, and we’re more than ready to see it go!

Hey radu!
Son just left after dinner and hanging out.
We've had a true Indian Summer, last few days have been warm and in the '70's after our first freeze 10 days ago, and nice weather is happening for a little while longer.
Not many more days of mowing as the grass is in its dormant stage but the leaves on the dogwood tree in the backyard are turning bright purple and getting ready to fall and cover the backyard.
'Sup your way?

Sounds like the perfect day to me. Savor it, because who knows what’ll happen next. LOL!
Yes, with the rest of the week in the mid-to-high 80s, today was just wonderful. I think it made it up to 78 [or did I already say that LOL]

Howdy, PRO!
BRRR! You’ve already had first freeze? We’ve had some chilly nights but not THAT chilly. Can’t say I’m ready for it either. LOL
We had a brisk weekend with temps in the low 60s but have 70s all this week. Hubby would LOVE for our grass to reach the dormant stage but we have a ways to go yet. A few trees on the mountain are starting to show some colors but they’re still green around here for the most part. It won’t be long, though, before they turn and drop leaves for us to pile up to burn.
Had a busy, busy weekend at the museum and da tootsies are still achin’. LOL Had a lot of fun, though, and met some really nice folks.

It WAS a perfect day. If not for corn being harvested on both sides of us close by, it would have been a great patio day.
78 is bad at all. That will be our highest temp this week with the rest being a little cooler.
Those mid to high 80s, you can keep down there. LOL

I don’t want to keep them! I want them to go away until next April or so. LOL! At least, being desert with low humidity, the temp goes way down overnight into the 50s or low 60s.
Coal has been coming around more, for which I’m glad. She let me brush her this morning. She loves that.
I hope you continue to have nice days so maybe you can finally get some patio time before it gets really chilly.

We don’t want ‘em here! If we can stay in the 60s and 70s for a while and have actual Fall this year, it would be sooooo nice. We’re tired of going from summer straight into winter.
Good girl, Coal! Not nice to wander off and make your mommy fret. LOL Glad to hear she’s sticking around and hope she continues to do so. She sure had us worried when she took off.

She sure did have us worried, the little stinker. She does come at rather odd times, and I just get lucky when I catch her. Both times today she was their waiting on the front porch with Li’l Bit.
Indeed...fall is wonderful and it helps if we can eeease into winter, not be thrown into it. LOL! hang around 70s! And farmers, get done with all that harvest dust you’re stirring up!

It’s possible she was home all along and you just didn’t see her when she showed up to eat. Cats can be contrary lil critters at times. :-)
It sure does help to ease into winter! It seems that lately, we haven’t had much autumn at all. One day it’s summer, then BAM! It’s frigid. We’ll see what happens this year and hope for the best.
You mentioned harvesting. I just stepped outside a few minutes ago and I swear I heard a combine in the fields next to us to the east. It’s 3:00 in the morning and a little foggy. I don’t know who bought all that acreage this year but I hope he has silos with stout dryers for that wet corn!

Well, Gizmo decided to roll in some more poop. I did wash him off afterward.
Nice weather yesterday.
And the rest of the pics.....

We were stationed there for a few years. Great food out in town and the outlets were pretty good too.

Located on the grounds of the Naval Shipyard is what use to be the Portsmouth Naval Prison. It housed Navy and Marine Corp prisoners from 1908 to 1974. The building still stands, but is unused.
