Philadelphia passes bill barring cops from making minor traffic stops

Lawmakers in Philadelphia have passed legislation barring cops from making minor traffic stops that critics say unfairly target minorities — becoming the first major US city to do so.

Mayor Jim Kenney is expected to sign the legislation into law in the coming days, and it would take effect 120 days after that, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The Philadelphia City Council voted 14-2 on Thursday to pass the Driving Equality Bill — designed to reduce “unequal police practices” against minority motorists, or what’s been called “driving while black,” for minor offenses such as busted tail lights or expired inspection stickers.

A companion bill that passed Thursday also mandates the creation of a public database of traffic stops, allowing users to search data about the alleged infraction.

“These bills end the traffic stops that promote discrimination while keeping the traffic stops that promote public safety,” the city council said in a statement. “This approach seeks to redirect police time and resources towards keeping Philadelphians safe while removing negative interactions that widen the divide and perpetuate mistrust.”

The fun begins when people start ignoring 'minor traffic' rules and intersections and streets become free for alls and people take matters into their own hands.

Be careful what you wish for.

The Philadelphia City Council thinks minorities are bad drivers.

The article seems to be saying the infractions are things like expired emissions stickers or improperly affixed license plates. Quite frankly, those are probably BS stops/revenue collection stops. If that is the case, let’s get those BS laws removed from the books rather than just picking and choosing what laws are enforced.

You’re right...

Honestly, these city leaders can’t grasp any correlation
between some of these hair-brained ideas, and future
problems that might be caused by them.

It’s as if any stooge could come up with an idea, and it
would be implemented, no questions asked.

I’m reminded of the movie Bedazzled. The Devil is a woman,
and she gets this guy to wish for things.

Each one of them winds up in total disaster.

Now it’s as if she is offering deals to today’s leaders,
“Just make a wish, and I’ll take care of it.” Then the
trouble begins.

We don’t get do overs either.

So in Philly turn signal are optional and “Stop” signs are merely suggestions.

News of the Future Now:

Philadelphia officials blamed ‘racist’ insurance companies for “unfairly” raising auto insurance rates on city residents.

When I attended university I obtained work with the campus police and county police. It was a rural college town (Kansas State University). When I had opportunity to ride-along I questioned the focus they placed on addressing the minor traffic/vehicle violations. Back then (mid 80s) FBI statistics informed officers that 80% of fugitive felons were captured with these ‘minor’ stops. I doubt it has changed much since then.

In a country which allows a legalized form of murder, traffic stops are small potatoes in the overall scheme of things.

I’m sure the white shirts in Operations will be issuing a list.

Probably including inspection stickers, non-functioning signal lamps, items hanging from the rearview mirror, license plate illumination, etc.

Hopefully nothing pertaining to moving violations...

If you can't keep your act together driving an insured, registered, and inspected vehicle on the city streets without finding a racial component to that then you have no business being out and about unsupervised. You are a menace to public safety and will most likely approach the rest of your obligations to society in a similar manner as your driving.

Stage #2, is a rude awakening when you cross over the Philly streets into Montgomery County's jurisdiction and your tail light broken ends up getting you locked up for unpaid child support, past tickets and warrants, drug charges for the weed in your car, and having no insurance.

Blame Philadelphia city council for that!

Go right ahead, Philadelphia, step on that garden rake, like they did in Seattle and Baltimore and most of Minnesota.
