Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told Republican colleagues at lunch Wednesday that he will make a new offer to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on a path forward to raising the nation’s debt limit, marking the start of long-awaiting negotiations between the two leaders.

But the catch is that McConnell will require Democrats to vote on a higher debt-limit number — something they would be required to do under the Senate’s budget reconciliation rules — instead of only voting on legislation to suspend the debt limit to sometime after next year’s midterm election.
14D Chess
McC just put Schumer et al. on timeout in a corner, and NONE of you self-styled policy wonks even have a CLUE.
It’s a little more detailed than this, but, in essence...
Democrat, Inc. wants their Pandora’s Box infrastructure deal.
But Democrat, Inc. ALSO wants to bump the Debt Limit.
McC just — in effect — said “Pick ONE.”
CHECKMATE!
Would you mind if I ping you to the first article that details the capitulation of McConnell and the Republicans to his long time friend, Demented Joe?
If McC’s move was a win for the Dems, why’s Hirono calling it BS?
I’ll tell you why: ‘cuz it AIN’T a win for Democrats.
THAT’s why.
McC has ‘em by the short-n-curlies.
You didn’t answer my question in #43. Get back to me with an answer.
I’m game... Ping me in.
Redstate has an excellent write-up about this... Mitch is playing chess here..
That would be a great START!
Thanks, great link.
I think it’s time to step back and refresh on something, here:
This reportage is from The Hill; NOT a Conservative-friendly, nor even generally a GOP-friendly source.
DO WE REALLY think their running “straight news” here?
Are we so gullible as to buy their spin uncritically?
And then to go bad-mouth an embattled Senate Minority Leader on that basis...?
Why, isn’t that EXACTLY what The Hill is trying to accomplish?
And here so many are jumping up to take the bait and go do The Hill’s dirty work for them...
Knee.
Jerk.
Pavlov.
It’s a real thing, and we really ought to know better, by now.
It means Pelosi is better at breaking arms than Piss Poor Mitch.
Yes, but it’s my take he’ll capitulate on the $3.5 trillion
bill they want.
They’ll get $2.5 trillion out of it, which is all they ever
wanted. Then they’ll push the limits and wind up with
$3.5 anyway.
I’m not seeing this as a sellout:
This, from the RedState article
“McConnell is not bailing out Joe Biden. Quite the opposite, in fact, and it doesn’t really take much effort to see what’s going on here. If anything, McConnell is backing Schumer into a corner. Stick with me here.
“Sometimes, the best thing you can do when you don’t otherwise have much leverage (because you are in the minority) is to give your opponents options they do not want. Democrats want you to believe that the only way to raise the debt ceiling without Republicans playing along is to blow up the filibuster. That’s why they and their media allies keep spinning that narrative. That’s never been true, though, and the point of McConnell’s maneuver is to force Schumer to admit that.
“In reality, Democrats can raise the debt limit via reconciliation without a single Republican vote, but they don’t want to go that route because they would be using the last bullet in the chamber on that after Biden’s “build back better” boondoggle. By offering Schumer a short-term extension, McConnell is forcing the Democrats to make a choice, and none of those choices includes blowing up the filibuster. The move also relieves pressure on Joe Manchin, who will be under immense assault if a shutdown happens, while at the same time highlighting that the Democrats could fix this themselves in short order if they wanted.”
The dems wouldn’t be freaking out over this if it were such a good deal for them. What they’re seeing here is McConnell offering them a Hobson’s Choice — pick one (debt ceiling or the $3.5 trillion - knowing BOTH must happen) or none at all. This boxes the dems in where they don’t want to be.
I despise that snake. I’m so ticked I called all of his offices today!

Not trying to ding you on this, but Lindsey is a total
write off for me. I don’t pay attention to anything he says.
Mitch and Ryan sat on their hands for the first two years of
the Trump presidency, passing one single major piece of
legislation after waiting decades to get the majority again.
I have no use for the guy. The Tax bill, their only major
accomplishment, sunsets in 2024.
Countless times I have seen Mitch undercut us, and compromise
to help the Democrats.
Charitably, I’ll just say he needs to go.
That’s why I said “even Lindsay Graham.” If Graham admits that Mitch is selling us out, that’s like one criminal ratting another one out.
Good point, and I apologize for not picking up on that.
I should have.
My most vivid memories of Graham are captured by pictures of him laughing with his Dem buddies about the GWB amnesty.
