(Prime Minister) Scott Morrison loses top spot on AFR Magazine's most powerful Australians list

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is no longer considered the most powerful person in the country, according to the Australian Financial Review Magazine.

The magazine today releases its annual Power Issue, in which a panel of experts select the Australians who wield the most power to shape our everyday lives.

Traditionally the Prime Minister sits at number one on the list — and in October 2020 Mr Morrison claimed top billing thanks in part to the successful JobKeeper program.

But this year the AFR Magazine panel elected to combine four state premiers in Gladys Berejiklian (NSW), Daniel Andrews (Victoria), Annastacia Palaszczuk (Queensland) and Mark McGowan (Western Australia) for an equal first place.

It's the first time since the power list began in 2000 that the Prime Minister has not been perceived as the country's most powerful person.

A full list of the top 10 most overtly powerful Australians can be seen below.

Financial Review editor-in-chief Michael Stutchbury said the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the true power structures as governed by Australia's constitution.

"The pandemic has resulted in a real shift in how power is exercised within the federation," Stutchbury said.

"That's based on the extreme risk aversion within the population, which the premiers have responded to."

I have found myself repeatedly posting recently trying to explain that because of the way Australia's constitution operates (giving state governments primary control over public health matter, not the federal government, which cannot overrule state governments in their domains) the Prime Minister is not generally responsible for the mess in Australia right now - the state Premiers are.

This article just illustrates that point.

Incidentally just moments ago, one of those state Premiers, Gladys Berejiklian of New South Wales announced her resignation because she's being investigated for corruption.

One hopes that her replacement shall be an improvement.

strike Gladys off AFR’s list.

Well, from what little I know of the likely replacement (it’s not my state so I don’t pay a huge amount of attention to all the details of their politics), he’s a conservative Catholic so I have hopes.

1 down 3 to go. 🙂

Bye bye Gladys Berejiklian of New South Wales. Couldn't happen to a more vile woman. 🙂

That’s the way the US is supposed to be by design.

Order of greater to lesser power

People > county > state > fedgov

Due to isolation, WA hasn't had any significant outbreaks.

But it has done lockdowns - sometimes because of one case in the entire state.

I sure hope NSW does better than New York State, where they replaced a Communist with a Fascist.

Sounds like at least one or two of your state Premiers ave a lot in common wit more tan a few of our Governors...most of whom are Trump hating Democrats or RINOs.

You've recently educated us (and me in particular) on the "limitations" (my word) of your national Constitution regarding individual rights. I've been hoping that challenges to various orders issued by some of our Governors would reach the Federal courts as violations of our "national" Constitution...but so far I've only heard of two orders overturned by Federal judges (Massachusetts and Pennsylvania).

I don't know how many Aussies have similar hopes from your Commonwealth (is that the correct name?) courts.

“But it has done lockdowns - sometimes because of one case in the entire state. “

They really do have to get past that. If not you guys will end up being like the American Indians were when the Europeans arrived - unable to fight off their viruses, so 90% of them died. Unless the vaccines improve greatly (or Ivermectin is allowed to be used), the virus will continue to be floating around the world, so it’s hard to see how Australians could ever leave their country...and likewise it will be very difficult for people to visit (mandatory quarantines).

They really do have to get past that.

That is the plan - how well the plan will be implemented remains to be seen, but I'm reasonably hopeful.

We'll hit 80% of adults fully vaccinated by sometime next month and at that point, lockdowns are meant to only occur in absolute last resort situations (which shouldn't happen if the modelling is even close to right).

New York, like Kalifornia (and at least several other states) is beyond hope. Have you ever been to NYC? Westchester County? Nassau County?

Mark McGowan, Western Australian left-wing Premier, is as insane as the rest of them. he just locked out the rest of the country.

1 Oct: ABC Australia: Mark McGowan accuses eastern states of failing to appreciate China at WA event
By James Carmody
While political tensions between Beijing and Canberra were largely left aside, WA Premier Mark McGowan used an event with the state’s top Chinese diplomat to lament the eastern states’ failure to acknowledge China’s contribution to Australia’s economic success.

Neither Mark McGowan nor Consul General Long Dingbin made mention of their nations’ ongoing trade war, the AUKUS deal and the nuclear submarines that come with it, or the fact Australian Federal Ministers cannot get their Chinese counterparts to pick up the phone.

As guests of honour, alongside mining magnate Andrew Forrest, they both highlighted the strong relationship WA had with China at the China Australia Business Council event to celebrate the 72nd Chinese National Day...

Mr McGowan said WA had supported the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic by keeping open industries which export to China...
WA’s new China Consul General had praise for the Premier and a positive assessment of the Chinese Australian relationship...

“Have you ever been to NYC? Westchester County? Nassau County?”

The outlying areas are ok, if you don’t mind paying big-time for everything. NYC, from about 1995 to 2015 was a GREAT place to visit, given the way Rudy and Bloomberg dealt with crime. But those days are over and they’ve now voted themselves back to their prior Third World existence...so no point in visiting...probably ever again in my lifetime.

He didn’t ‘just’ do it. He’s been locking out the rest of the country for most of the pandemic.

sorry I didn’t make myself clearer. I was being sarcastic, saying maybe McGowan didn’t declare multiple lockdowns...but he locked out the rest of Australia instead.

didn’t mean he “just NOW” locked out the rest of the country.

The reason I mentioned NYC,Westchester and Nassau was to bolster my argument that NY State is lost. Those three places represent something like 80% of the state's population and they're all Maoist hotbeds. Yes,Westchester County is really nice but it's populated by wealthy Maoists. I've never been to Long island but I understand that it,too,is nice but the residents are just like Westchester’s.
