Heating costs may triple as nat gas, propane shortage looms

There is a real energy crisis in Europe that was created by a combination of political missteps, climate change fear-mongering and a woke energy policy that could leave much of Europe and Asia undersupplied as they head into winter.

It is also a foreshadowing of what may happen in the U.S.

Oil topped the $75 per barrel level this week, the highest since October of 2018. Instead of learning from the mistakes that Europe made, we instead want to copy their failures and put our economy and people's lives at risk. The Biden administration had better heed the warning signs and call on the U.S. energy industry to try to raise production ahead of what could be one of the most expensive winters that we've seen in years. If not, they risk destroying the U.S. economy and leaving poor people out in the cold

You’re right.

And the Snowflakes will be the first to melt down in the cold.

What the hell are they talking about? and why are they denigrating Europe’s quest to GO GREEN?

We're on propane for heating; tank was topped off a week ago and we're STILL running a credit from last year. Beau installed a buried copper line from the tank to the house last year. Heating and cooking are propane. Hot water is electric. Water is from a well, so needs electricity to the pump.

Beau and I both run 'hot' so a cooler house is fine with us. 58 at night and usually 62 during the day. We got a new heating and A/C system two years ago and I am SO glad we did! It's super efficient. Our Family Room was an addition to the main house; the only source of heat is a gas fireplace that heats it up to perfection - of course that's where the house dog and cats can be found until Spring, LOL!

The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a colder than normal winter for us, here in Wisconsin. If the Woolly Bear Caterpillars are any indication, they're contradicting that. ;)

Where I live in Texas, the price of electricity contracts are up 25% from last spring, probably due to natural gas prices.

We’re in for a ride!

Looks like they are forecasting snow for Columbus Day weekend.

That could be a real problem if it happens because the leaves are barely turning color on the trees here and we would be sure to lose power.

They are charging for look further out than Oct for the northeast.

I wonder what Joe Bastardi has to say.......

Mr. mm took our tractor and dug a trench and laid the gas line in for us this past summer. We got the tank and got it filled as soon as we could after he was done.

The next couple weeks are going to be focused on putting the garden to bed and getting the garlic in.

Precisely. Anybody living in a cold area should have a wood stove if possible.

Last winter we got down to 8 degrees just North of Houston. Not allot of folks were prepared for that round these parts.

The wife and I loved the 4 1/2 inches of snow. The rolling blackouts kinda sucked but we had plenty of wood for the fireplace, lil portable heater and regular electric furnace when power came back.

No shortage of wood this year either. Good to go.

I started on my stove today. AZ high deserts get a tad bit chilly at night.

10 degrees can be seen here sometimes.

But not this year again since we are in La Nina again.

Better to be safe than sorry though.

Gas was $1 more per gallon today than last year at the same time. I pumped 6.39 gallons @ $3.13/gal for $20 today.

Last year the same 6.39 gallons @ $2.13/gal would have cost me $13.61.

That $6.39 difference would buy me 8 lbs of chicken thighs or 3 gallons of milk or 7 loaves of bread or 13 lbs of bananas...etc etc.

Biden just keeps screwing with our economy.

Cheaper to freeze the deplorables than to shoot them.

Guess I’m glad I added 300 gallons to the tank out back... Might wanna get another 100, I guess... if there’s room in that 1,000 gallon sucker.

Two wood stoves and plenty of wood if need be. :). We put the garden “ to bed” just the other day.. I still have to can the smaller potatoes, but that will be a weekend chore, as I’m still working full time. :) I’d still like a decent root cellar, but that’s a project for next year. :)

Good gawd I'd freeze to death. Add 10 to that and I'm good. I'm skinny and have zero insulation. We have regional predictors here, folk tales mostly. One year I heard lots of akerns (acorns)mean a long winter, didn't happen. Persimmon seeds cut just the right way will show a knife, fork or spoon pattern and spoon(shovel) means lots of snow, didn't happen. This year, tons of acorns and hickory nuts yet we're just over two weeks out from the First Frost date and it was 89 degrees today.

The first two years we lived in MO were heat wave summer with temps over 100, not predicted(and we had no A/C). The third year was our first on this property and it snowed on the wife's birthday, first week of May, not predicted.

The only prediction today that will come true is things are not going to get better. That's because the dems are in office, repubs are silent(obama 3.0) and the entire globe is all in for something and it won't be good for a lot of us.

My father-in-law heated his house with wood in a stove for his whole lifetime. Even when it was well below freezing outside, that house was nice and toasty.

But then he died, and a few years later his wife became disabled. They got her a pellet stove, but that didn’t work out very well as her condition progressed; especially if the power went out.

Now she can’t deal with either, and has had to revert to the electric heat that they had never used.

But the old wood stove seemed to work better than the pellet stove did.

“raise production ahead of what could be one of the most expensive winters”

They’re building more windmills and solar panels as fast as they can.

That’s why I save phone books… good emergency TP.

LOL, our phone book is 1/2" thick and not much bigger than half of a sheet of A4 paper in the other two dimensions. I do save them though. We don't throw out or donate much in the way of clothing either. I go through it and pull out anything that has some cotton content and save it, undies excluded. They make good rags. I also want to pick up some of these, https://www.webstaurantstore.com/choice-16-x-19-18-oz-white-100-cotton-ribbed-terry-bar-towels-in-bulk-case/1677BRT18CS.html since paper product prices are going through the roof. At over a dollar a roll for half way decent paper towels, it wouldn't take too long for 300 - 16"x19" towels for $135 to pay for themselves. Just 2-3 years at today's prices.

Wood fire open or in a stove just soaks into you like nothing else. You get heat as in higher temp but that radiant heat as well. It is a bit dry though so most people keep a pot of water on the stove so that it adds moisture as the water evaporates.

We have an old Fisher Papa Bear with a big flat spot on the front that will fit our 12” cast iron skillet and is the best or evenly heating it and cooking bacon that cooks even. No hot spot in the middle of the pan etc.
