Wall Street and the big international corporations have suddenly awakened to the threat China poses. And no, it has nothing to do with the danger China poses to American national security, the massive theft of U.S. intellectual property, the release of the Wuhan virus on the world, or even its use of Uighur Muslims in forced labor. Rather, it has to do with the threat to Wall Street profits. This is what had George Soros criticizing BlackRock's recent investments in China and the Wall Street Journal clutching its pearls. Here's the backdrop to the story.
As the WSJ put it, Xi is trying to forcibly get the country back to the vision of Mao Zedong, who saw capitalism as a mere transition phase on the road to socialism. Accordingly, Xi's plans call for more government intervention in the economy. Since he has consolidated power, the Chinese president is putting the entire state apparatus behind making private companies serve the state. Also, private businesses and the wealthy are now being "encouraged" to donate more of their wealth and profits toward Xi's "common prosperity" goals. Alibaba alone has pledged the equivalent of $15.5 billion. And Western investments in China are not being ignored by Xi.
For foreign businesses, the campaign likely means more turbulence ahead. Western companies always had to toe the party line in China, but they are increasingly asked to do more, including sharing personal user data and accepting party members as employees. They could be pressed to sacrifice more profits to help Beijing achieve its goals.
Xi is quoted as saying, "Socialism with Chinese characters is socialism, not any other 'ism.'" Some might argue that Xi is actually going full fascist.

As he centralizes more and more power into his own hands he becomes more and more a single point of failure. A successful assassination could leave China in chaos as the various factions vie for power.
A big thanks to US businessmen and bankers who enriched them helped them develop technology and become a world menace. Free traitors.
So does that mean he is going to kill another 50 million Chinese folks?
Could??? If you are a US Corporation providing all of the technology and most of the capital in a China joint-venture where you can only own 49% of the common stock -- what happens when Xi orders that J-V corporation to "contribute"? That's right! It comes right off the corporate balance sheet and impact profitability and shareholder return.
Unfortunately for Xi the Chinese people today aren’t anything like the ones Mao had. Good luck forcing them to go back to living like they did in the 1950s and 60s.
However, the CEO still gets their pay, and their stock shares, and their retirement package, along with the really fabulous side trips to China where every single fantastic perk you could ever get for being a CEO exists.
They don’t care.
You mean the current crop of people who have to be taught how to be manly again? Seriously, as long as their internet is good, they don’t care.
Aw, why do these hardliners always ignore Engels and try to transform society all at once? </sarcasm>— The Principles of Communism
- Will it be possible for private property to be abolished at one stroke?
No, no more than existing forces of production can at one stroke be multiplied to the extent necessary for the creation of a communal society.
In all probability, the proletarian revolution will transform existing society gradually and will be able to abolish private property only when the means of production are available in sufficient quantity.
They’ll care when their trading partners create another depression and their money is worthless.
Part of being manly is defending the institution of the family. Communists have “abolition of the family” as one of their core doctrines, and they’ve had seven decades to entrench that doctrine in Red China.
Xi is merely a puppet...and his master is trying to hide behind him
Xi is afraid on a personal level so he’s reaching for MORE CONTROL. That’s what happens when we feel things are spinnig out of control. It’s the wrong response.
Big mistake on Xi’s part.
Capitalism works - keeps the machinery of progress oiled. Bad things are happening all over the world. It’ll pass - always does. Xi needs to relax control. His people are smart and capable and will do what keeps their fiefdoms going - which is what keeps the country going.
Yep. That huge Yellow Peril of the worldwideweb.
I think that Xi will find the same lesson as Mikhail Gorbachev... you can’t give people a little freedom and expect them to be satisfied and not want more.
BTW, why did Skurkiss write “Xi Jin Ping” but not “Mao Ze Dong”? Should I write his name “Skur Kiss” too?
All he needs is for the military to stay loyal to him.
Most of the huge companies Zi is destroying are owned by his power competitor and their families. He has to destroy them and that is his main purpose. New corporations will rise, but they will owe their existence to Zi.
The "Xi Is Always Right" faction.
All the other factions have "Life Expectancy" issues.
