Western companies always had to toe the party line in China, but they are increasingly asked to do more, including sharing personal user data and accepting party members as employees. They could be pressed to sacrifice more profits to help Beijing achieve its goals.

Could??? If you are a US Corporation providing all of the technology and most of the capital in a China joint-venture where you can only own 49% of the common stock -- what happens when Xi orders that J-V corporation to "contribute"? That's right! It comes right off the corporate balance sheet and impact profitability and shareholder return.

However, the CEO still gets their pay, and their stock shares, and their retirement package, along with the really fabulous side trips to China where every single fantastic perk you could ever get for being a CEO exists.

They don’t care.
