Rescue of 39 trapped miners underway near Sudbury, Vale says

SUDBURY, Ont. — A mining company says 39 workers who’ve been trapped underground near Sudbury, Ont., since yesterday are now slowly on their way out.

Vale says no one has been injured at the Totten Mine and all the trapped workers are expected to reach the surface by tonight.

The company said the trapped miners have had access to food, water and medicine.

Vale said the incident happened when a scoop bucket being sent underground Sunday afternoon detached, blocking the mine shaft.

As a result, it said the “conveyance system” for taking workers to and from the surface is unavailable.

“The employees will exit via a secondary egress ladder system with support of Vale’s mine rescue team,” the company said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his thoughts were with the miners.

“We understand this rescue will take some time and are very relieved to hear the miners are currently uninjured,” he said on Twitter.

Totten Mine opened in 2014, in Worthington, Ont. – the first mine to open in the area in 40 years, according to the company’s website.

The mine produces copper, nickel and precious metals and employs about 200 people.

The elevator broke so they have to climb up a ladder to exit the mine.

A 4000' ladder.

I hate ladders.

According to science Sudbury is an ancient meteor impact crater.

There are two impact craters at Sudbury. One inside of another. Billions of years apart.

A 4000’ ladder? I assume the big guys will be last to get on... That’s a long way to huff and puff.

“What’s that, you miners are not vaccinated?”

‘Quick Dudley, seal the mine!”

Despite all the historical mine disasters over the years, hard rock mines like those in the Sudbury area are generally some of the safest places to work in the civilized world. They are far different than the underground coal mines where most mining disasters occur.

Better to be a hard rock miner in Sudbury than a coal miner in China?

I know it pays better.

No, Overlord of Ontario, Doug ‘Thug’ Ford, is not quite THAT evil. I do however, see him requiring each miner be vaccinated before he leaves the mine. He is that much of a two faced creep.

“The company said the trapped miners have had access to food, water and medicine.” -— I’m sure they would like some air too.

According to science Sudbury is an ancient meteor impact crater.

Heavier materials (like iron, gold, etc) all settled deep below the surface when the planet was young and hot and still in a (at least partially) liquid or plastic state. Everywhere these metals are found close enough to the surface today to be mined is a sign of some manner of geologic disturbance, like plate tectonics or a meteorite strike, bringing those materials closer to the surface.
