Hospitals and nursing homes in New York are bracing for the possibility that a statewide COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers could lead to staff shortages when it takes effect Monday.
Doctors and nurses — and also support staff, like food service workers and cleaners — have been given until Sept. 27 to get at least their first vaccine shot in one of the nation's most aggressive plans to protect patients.
With just days left to go before the deadline, many still hadn't. That left the prospect of potentially thousands of health care workers being forced off the job next week.
With no sign of Gov. Kathy Hochul backing down, hospitals and nursing homes were preparing contingency plans that included cutting back on elective surgeries and, at one hospital, halting maternity services. Nursing homes were limiting admissions. The state’s largest health care provider, Northwell Health, was keeping thousands of volunteers on standby.
“We would like to see some more time to be able to comply and implement the vaccine mandate, because at the end of the day it’s a situation where we’re very concerned about our ability to care for the patients," said Tom Quatroche, CEO of the Erie County Medical Center Corporation, which operates a busy 573-bed hospital in Buffalo.

Is this going to be the straw that breaks the Democrats back?

Maybe they should rethink the idea of hiring vaccinated virus spreaders while firing healthy people.
Nursing home employees are gonna wait until the last possible second and then ghost their employers.
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Good!
If health care is anything like my industry (logistics) a presumably “small” shortage of only 5% of “normal” levels of drivers or capacity will screw things up far more than anyone can imagine
Loved ‘em last year, lay ‘em off this year.
Health Care workers. Last years heroes are this years Zeroes. Every one of them should say they are out for COVID and take a two week vacation.
The health care industry is notoriously short of employees—5% no shows would be plenty to cripple it, but the number is gonna be a lot higher than that.
It’s all part of the plan.
More people will die due to understaffed hospitals.
The government’s management of this virus created dozens of ways to kill people besides the virus itself.
Governor Frunt gets it’s first chance to show what a incompetent loser she is
and CANNOT blame it on the previous regime!!!
well, she could i guess, but...
I’ve already told my employers: consider any mandate my notice of resignation. We are already short-staffed, and cannot afford any staff losses. I am in hospice.
I had COVID and am verified immune by titer.... I’ll not take the vaccine.
My employer states they will NOT ever require vaccination regardless of mandates; both my company and I personally am ready to file a lawsuit and injunction id state and federal court if this happens.
OSHA tried already and backed down...
The Hospital could end this overnight by simply stating:
Effective Immediately we will no longer treat or care for ANY Public Employee, the Government created this problem and we are going to treat ONLY Private Citizens that don’t work for Government.
These hospitals decided it was a good idea to screw with
their employees.
Well, it wasn’t.
Some of their best employees just left the plant.
The female Cuomo tyrant of NY has thus decreed. Move over Gretchen ‘Witchmore’. So much for the holy estrogens to the rescue.
Nurses have been in demand for as long as I can remember.
This is like watching a bully punch himself in the face. Ha ha

A friend told me the same thing a few weeks ago. He said things could really get out of hand in a very short time.
Good. Stand strong.
