You're right. I should have done my homework before and looked into HIPPA and the EEOC regarding the possibility of being asked.
For others who haven't, the EEOC states that "employers are allowed to ask their employees about their vaccination status". HIPAA establishes restrictions on sharing information, not asking.

My simple reading of HIPPA says that anyone can ask, but they cannot force you to answer or discriminate against you if you refuse.
Medical discrimination is also covered by the ADA.
