Philippine President Duterte hands-off on Ivermectin use for Covid; Leaves discretion to doctors, patients

As the debate on its effectiveness in treating coronavirus (COVID-19) continues, President Duterte has decided to leave the use of antiparasitic drug ivermectin to the discretion of doctors and patients.

Duterte made the statement as the clinical studies on ivermectin as a cure for COVID-19 continue worldwide.

In his pre-recorded public address aired Saturday morning, September 11, the President recognized that some sectors continue to claim that ivermectin works as a cure for COVID-19. However, he said no medical journal has been published to prove the claims.

“The problem is it is not clear. Nobody has published in a journal– a medical journal which the doctors rely on– that would say that all of these tests were conducted and the result is what is being laid down here,” he said.

“Everything is a quandary… There is no actual definite finding that is published in medical journals that would tell us that it’s okay to use it,” he added.

President Duterte said despite this, he cannot force people to stop taking the drug. He decided to leave it to the discretion of doctors and their patients.

“I leave it really to [the] patient-doctor relationship. If the doctor believes in good faith that it can help and the patient also believes in his heart that he will get well, we leave it up to you to decide,” he said.

“Because it’s hard to be blamed if it turned out to be really effective then you stop them,” he added.

The President, however, said he would remain guided by government doctors.

“Since I am a worker of government, I rely on the work and the narratives of government doctors so I am bound by what they say. I cannot really say anything so much about ivermectin,” he said.

“If both doctor and patient believe that it can help, that it will produce results, then that’s up to you. I leave it up to your good discernment if you think it is the right thing to do,” he added.

In June, President Duterte wanted the speedy completion of the study on the efficacy of ivermectin because many people have been waiting for it. The clinical studies in the country started last month.

I personally approve of President Duterte's approach to Ivermectin --- INFORMED CONSENT, NO COERCION FOR OR AGAINST IT.

This is as it should be. The USA and individual states in the union should really adopt this approach.

Well well well. It will be interesting to compare the PI results with India. If only a state Governor in the US would do the same thing.

“President Duterte has decided to leave the use of antiparasitic drug ivermectin to the discretion of doctors and patients. “

Liberty and Personal Freedom would dictate otherwise?

It’s almost as if he believes in freedom.

Almost.

And that is not going to happen as long as the vaccine keeps getting pushed. If it did get published it would prove the vaccine wasn’t needed and Fauci isn’t going to let that happen.

What happens if a doc prescribes ivermectin? Can he lose his license?

A very wise decision by President Duterte! Fauci should take his advice.

It’s very difficult to compare PI vs anywhere because the course of Covid has been vastly different there than in most places. The death rate has been unaccountable low, for one thing.
And the PI lockdown policies have been extremely extended and draconian.

I suppose I’d take a tyrant who simply want to be in power over one who’s actively trying to destroy his own country.

A Dengue Fever Vaccine fiasco in the Philipines...

Perhaps related...Seems they did not test long enough on children :(

Certainly a cautionary tale...

So not impressed with Rodrigo Duterte. What he had to say just two weeks ago to the Philippine people disgusted me....calling them pigs for wanting Ivermectin. Just looking at him...he's got the shthole-country idiot factor just imprinted on his face.

Possibly because they don't pay a bounty to call everything a covid death?

The rules here in the Philippines change about as often as the weather in Kansas.
For the longest time, Ivermectin was available ‘over the counter’, if I recall correctly. Then the Philippine version of the FDA pulled it because “vaccinate” (not “treat”) became the popular word. (No profit in a 15¢ tablet)
We’re down about 5 friends/acquaintances since the ‘shoot everybody’ attitude kicked in.
Shhh; but don’t tell anybody.

The dept of health tried to forbid it, but people were taking it anyway, the worry was they might be buying imitation counterfeit pills, so Duterte will let docs prescribe it and folk can buy it from local pharmacies or on line.

My stepdaughter's pastor told her where to get it.

We have been vaxxed (AstraZeneca, not the mRNA vaccine) and I think she and the maid had a mild case awhile back but were not tested.

However, her husband is low risk and an antivax type, so I am giving him a dose weekly as a prevention.
