I associate O’Conner with the Winchester 70 in .270. Also goes bang every time you pull the trigger...

For some reason I remember O’Conner because I was stunned he did not lick his beloved .270. Of course I.could be way off on author, as I read that many many years ago.

I apologize in advance for this being slightly off-topic.

I followed the National Interest blog for quite some time, but finally stopped paying attention to them because they were so virulently anti-Trump. “We’ve got to get this guy out of here.” I got kinda tired of it. They never really say WHY they’re so against him, right? Just “Wow, we hate this guy. He needs to go.”

Ok, so - is what we have now BETTER, in their opinion?

I know a lot of y’all probably follow “the national interest” and maybe you know the answer to this.

Well, not really, since the M-4 is merely an evolution of the M-16.

I was watching something yesterday, and they made the argument that the changes between the M-16 and M-4 were significant enough that the M-4 could be considered a new and completely different rifle. That same argument could be made with the AK-12. Not sure I agree with the idea; it was an interesting take though.

The weapon..boasts a maximum sighting range of 800m

Just looking at the sight radius of that gun, you couldn't hit the side of a barn with it at that distance, and that bullet will have lost most of its effectiveness if you could.

I was always glad that our enemies constantly kept adopting inferior weapons starting with the AK-47. They still seem to believe in the tactic of "spray and pray."

I don’t know if Jack O’Conner said that but his point is valid. It goes bang everytime and I may add, the 30 caliber bullet is heavier compared to the 5.56 bullet.

A friend of mine owns a AK74 and I got to shoot it a couple of times.
Very memorable. 😀

I’m holding out for a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.

Apparently the Nikonov AN-94 was too [expensive/complicated/unreliable/lacked-political-connections/fill-in-the-Russian-blank]...

" the argument that the changes between the M-16 and M-4 were significant enough that the M-4 could be considered a new and completely different rifle."

Trying to think how many parts from one would not fit nicely in the other. Trigger burst control aside.

A refined M-16 perhaps, but not new.

Looks like they kept the AK74 muzzle brake - which is the LOUDEST muzzle device I've ever personally used. All of the Russian conscripts must stuff pocket lint or cigarette butts in their ears when they're issued ammunition (not picturing Uncle Vladi spending many rubles for hearing protection ;^)...

Never forget to remind the execrable 'never-Trumpers' that THEY OWN JOE BIDEN & EVERYTHING HE F@CKS UP...

If I had to travel in space and explore a Earth like planet, Id want an Ak chambered in 7.62x39 although here on Earth I like the AR-15 chambered in 5.56.

Years ago, a read about a group of Montagnards, who were forced to flee Vietnam when the communists took over. Their only option was a cross-country trek, so they grabbed what weapons they had (M16s, AKs, etc.) & started off.

About a year later, they finally reached a non-communist destination (Thailand???). By that time, most of their firearms had apparently ceased to function & been discarded; I expected the surviving firearms to be the ubiquitous AKs, and it surprised the heck out of me to read that their US M1/M2 30 caliber carbines outlasted everything else.

Of course, it might be they carried the carbines to 'the end of the road', because they weighed less than the AKs, and were more robust than the ARs...

;^)

To answer Your “off topic”
Trump was Going to make
America Great Again,Absolutely!
He was going to unravel the
Communists and One World
plans for a “Great Reset.”
The Destruction of this Nation is imperative to many ideologies.
.
Does that help?

Interesting story. I think you made some valid points. I probably would be wearing a loincloth and carrying a sharp stick at the end of that journey.

Ditto. They must have known what they were doing, to live off the land for that long, over such a distance. You hope you never have to face a similar choice, for you & your family...
