For the benefit of young FR readers:

The U.S. defeated the enemy combat forces and North VN was no longer able to field and army.

Thereafter the warring parties and the U.S. signed a peace treaty.

1972 The U.S. left VN at its convenience.

The Dem majority in Congress discontinued military aid for South VN with knowledge the North was building an oversized military force.

1975 The North invaded South VN.

The ladder to the embassy rooftop for escape helicopters was not for U.S. military but for Vietnamese that had been associated with the U.S. (see today's Afghanistan)

Well said. There's a real problem with those two years of missing history. The Paris Peace Accords date to 1 January 1973, at which time combat activity ceased with the 17th parallel still the legitimate border between the countries. 1973 and 1974 went by with what we'd hoped was the South Vietnamese government solidifying its sovereignty.

The key is the political push in the United States after Watergate and the changeover of Congress to the Democrats. The people who had promised aid to South Vietnam were no longer in a position to give it and the new Democrat regime flatly refused to do so. The result was a successful armored invasion, not any "people's war". The myth spinning began almost immediately and that false narrative has replaced the truth due to its ubiquity and its simplicity. People who actually lived through that era buy into it.
