Over the past week, as Taliban fighters shattered the brittle façade of Afghanistan’s armed forces, many commentators noted the unnerving similarity to 1975, when television viewers shuddered at images of frantic embassy personnel and their South Vietnamese allies climbing a ladder leading from the roof of the American embassy in Saigon to awaiting helicopters, while in the background, the steady rumble of enemy tanks grew heavier.
It was an undignified end to a long and costly war, and it was President Gerald Ford’s poor luck that it happened on his watch. Commenting on the almost simultaneous fall of Cambodia and South Vietnam to communist forces, Henry Kissinger remarked, “The good news is the war is over. The bad news is that we lost.”

What this does is tell everyone except the hardcore true believers that this is bad enough to be compared to other historically embarrassing situations. By actually acknowledging the comparisons, they are not doing Biden any positives. All they are really hoping for here is to mitigate the negatives.

Ford was in a weakened position due to Watergate. A few years later, the Reagan administration had the cojones to go around Congress and covertly fund the Contras.

And you can also (regarding Vietnam) thank LBJ and others like Robert McNamara with how they ran the war during the 1964 to 1968 era in which even the milk purchases from American farmers for the troops and Vietnamese locals was fraught with corruption and incompetence as opposed to a focus on truly winning the war (what smashing the VC support lines in Cambodia in 1970-71 was about).
