They can't handle and do not want 40,000 hostages. They will probably pick a couple of thousand to keep.
I don't think Biden can buy them back, and I don't think Biden can take them back by force.
I think he will have to agree to not defend Taiwan and to not sell Taiwan any more weapons to get them back.
It's a Catch-22, with China rising any way he goes about it.

And our forces on the ground might not make it out of afganistan imho.

There are so many thousands of people, not all westerners, but including various international contractors, business people, and local civilians who acted as interpreters or functionaries (who may end up standing accused of treason by the Taliban). What a mess they made by not planing an orderly exit and safe transport for everyone who lent support to our efforts over the last 20 years. The pulled the troops out before securing the civilians leaving them all exposed.
So all the relatives and friends and neighbors of the thousands waiting over there in harm’s way will be afraid. That’s a lot of local news interviews.
Then the killings will start. A renegade or two kill some Westerners, then evidence is found that the leaders planned it, then more killings. Then big increase in American guard troops engaging with the enemy. It’s called war.
Idea: If Americans gain the upper hand the terrorists can round up some hostages and threaten to torture them to death unless the US backs off.

I’m sure some of that’s happening, but I think the Taliban’s plan in concert with the CCP is to hold them for a longer term and bigger prize, that’s why you can’t negotiate or buy them out.
Really surprising they did not coordinate with Pakistan or India to turn the planes around quickly. Really surprising they pulled the military defense out without considering what would happen to the tens of thousands who worked to support our efforts. Really surprising they did not create an orderly system to bring people in phases and into a secure green zone well in advance of troop withdrawals.
I am in favor, in general principle, of getting out of Afghanistan but abandoning our allies and supporters like this is outrageous and demoralizing on a human level, and on a diplomatic and international relations level.

You can’t leave them there, it weakens the US so much globally, we won’t be seen as the sole super power anymore and China, Russia and Iran can be much more aggressive to get what they want. Conflicts in multiple regions.
You can’t agree to give up Tiawan. China would then have a strangle hold on strategic resources.
The problem with war is that not only the international community and your allies don’t want it, but we the people don’t want it, either, and you’d have to admit to everyone what the world is really like and give up your identity politics games.
Like I said, it’s a no win situation, and I think Biden stepped right in China’s trap.

AITA here? I feel the same way about “westerners in Afghanistan” as I do about people in the path of hurricanes. You had PLENTY OF WARNING to evacuate, yet you decided to just sit there, believing everything will be OK. And now that it’s all gone to SHEET (which everyone KNEW IT WOULD!), you want sympathy, and/or heroics to get you out.

I saw that story, they are on that plane because they forced their way on to that plane and the pilot decided to take off.
Those Afghan people are in that situation because they trusted and believed in us.

They can’t see a blinding light in front of them. They are inbred and inward looking.
A group of farmers put together from Alabama, Texas and Iowa would have done a much better assessment of this situation than the deep state failures that cooked up this cluster f$&@.
The deep state screwed this bigger than any disaster in decades .
