Sawyer sponsored a bill that would have raised the age to 18. Instead, a compromise measure that won unanimous support from the Senate in May and the House this week would raise the minimum marriage age to 16 with no exceptions, including pregnancy. And even those 16 or 17 would need parental permission or a judge’s decision that the marriage would “serve the best interest of an underage party.”
Rep. Kristin Baker of Cabarrus County, who helped shepherd the bill through the House, explained that “as a conservative Christian, I am a strong supporter of the sacrament of marriage.”
“As a child psychiatrist, I am determined to protect our vulnerable youth, enhancing their chances for healthy, happy futures,” she said. “I believe this bill works to achieve those ends.”
The bill’s proposed maximum age gap of four years partially mimics statutory rape laws that make it a serious felony for a minor to have sexual intercourse with someone who is significantly older. The legislation needs one more Senate vote before heading to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s desk, probably this week, where it’s likely to be signed into law.

Many decades ago, I knew someone who ran away to NC to ‘get hitched’......................
And we somehow expect them to leave that lifestyle behind them without even so much as an orientation class at the border.
West Virginia?...........................
My great-grandmother was a product of such a marriage in Vermont. Her son (my grandfather) was a college professor in a hard science. Other progeny include leading physicians in their field and other successful professionals. Not a single imbecile that I am aware of . . .
IOW, no Democrats...................
i doubt consent is part of the equation...
North Carolina’s marriage age: 16
Massachusetts’s marriage age: 12
Also younger than NC: Maryland, Utah, Alaska, Vermont and Mississippi
My aunt and uncle got married in Mississippi when she was 14 and he was 16. They were married for over 60 years until my uncle’s death a couple of months ago. She would not leave his side after he developed the dementia that took several years to kill him. Different times.
Sure, but under West Virginia state code §20-2-4 it is legal to take home and eat roadkill.
Not exactly germane to the discussion, but any chance to get a jab in on WV, I’m in!
The stated reason was that when they revised the laws in the '70s the old heavy penalties for incest were mysteriously left blank. Mysterious my eye, someone in power wanted those restrictions gone because ... well, you can fill in the blanks. And so they are.
They can establish an age to get married, but they can’t establish an age to determine an abortion. States who do not require parental involvement:
Alaska, Connecticut, D.C., Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and a number of ways to get it done.

Define age of marriage? Small potatoes.

Those laws date from the time that WV was the poorest of all the Appalachian states. Everybody kept chickens even in town. The only thing West Virginia had going for it was a lot of traffic + a lot of wildlife + a lot of people keeping chickens = a lot of roadkill. Poor mountain people have to survive.
BTW, while wildlife roadkill belongs to whomever get it, chickens belong to the owner. If you hit a chicken, you can keep it only if you pay the owner.
Despite being the butt of so many jokes, West Virginians are some of the kindest people I've met in the country and I've visited 49 states.
