The Biden administration is reportedly preparing for a worst-case scenario that would see the resurgent Taliban seize Afghanistan’s capital city—Kabul—within just 30 days.
The ferocity of the Taliban’s nationwide offensive in recent weeks has shocked U.S. and Afghan officials, with the group taking control of eight of the 34 provincial capitals within the past week.
Initially, U.S. intelligence assessed that Kabul could fall within six to 12 months of a U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, but that has reportedly been scaled back dramatically. According to The Washington Post, U.S. military officials now fear that Kabul could fall within 90 days—and some officials told the paper it could happen within a month. “Everything is moving in the wrong direction,” said one unnamed official.
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said he had no regrets over his decision to withdraw U.S. troops, and urged Afghanistan’s leaders to “fight for their nation.”

I think the intellectual state department folks felt that negotiations with the Taliban (from 2019-2020)were leading to a quiet period.
Presently, I would take a guess that more than one-third of the country is considering leaving and some massive exodus will occur between now and the beginning of 2022.
August 9, 2021 - The Taliban terrorist organization has taken over six Afghan capitals in just the last 4 days as they sweep across Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US and international force from the region.
It is what it is. If, after all our blood, treasure and assistance, our Afghan “allies” won’t defend their way of life, then its on them. On the other hand, the victors need to accept the full consequences for continued bad behavior.

Lots of us warned them 20 years ago that if they wanted to do it, Find out where Al Qaeda was, wipe them out ruthlessly, and then get the hell out.
But no, Bush and the Military Industrial Complex wanted to ‘nation build’. There was a small chance that they could succeed with that in Iraq, but none in Afghanistan.
When they completely take the country over no one will have to worry about innocent casualties..
