Oregon Governor signs new law allowing students to graduate without proving they can read, write, or do math

An Oregon high school diploma does not guarantee that students who earned it can read, write or do math at a high school level.

Governor Kate Brown dropped the requirement that students demonstrate they have achieved those essential skills by signing Senate Bill 744 into law. She declined again Friday to comment on why she supported suspending the proficiency requirements, reported OregonLive.

The bill was not entered into the legislative database until July 29, a departure from the standard practice of updating the public database the same day a bill is signed. Charles Boyle, the governor’s deputy communications director, said the governor’s staff told legislative staff the same day the governor signed the bill.

Boyle said in an emailed statement that suspending the reading, writing and math proficiency requirements will benefit "Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of colour."

Oregon education officials have long insisted they would not impose new graduation requirements on students who have already begun high school. New requirements would not take effect until the class of 2027. That means at least five more classes could graduate without demonstrating proficiency in math and writing.

“The Butchers of Beijing are laughing their a$$es off these days.”

I don’t know...they can’t afford (at this time) to have their best customers so destitute that they can no longer afford to buy Chinese products.

At this rate, in the future, this country will still be a very nice place, once they clear out the deadwood.

“Reminds me of the practice during slavery in America of some slaveholders. They did not want the slaves to be taught to read because they might figure out how unjust their station was.”

It reminds you of this, because this is exactly that.

Wasn’t it Governor Kate Brown who signed the bill?

if proficiency requirements are set aside, then the entire premise for ‘public’ school, and taxation of property owners for the support of them, is moot

Her act is therefore, unconstititional or precident setting releasing homeowners from taxes

this should be fun

Why have teachers?

Why even have schools for that matter?

What a bunch of liberal dimwits.

What about Latinb, Latinc, Latind, Latine all the way through Latinz?

Somehow I doubt the Asians are eager to be included in the crowd of illiterate idiots who can't read, write or do math

Bunch of bigots running that state, with the "soft bigotry of low expectations."

I suppose it was but I was quoting Charles Boyle, the governor’s deputy communications director.

He added: "Leaders from those communities have advocated time and again for equitable graduation standards, along with expanded learning opportunities and support."

Equity vs Equality.

Indeed. My thoughts as well. If a person is commenting on a literacy thread, I’d think they would be a bit more attentive to . . . well, literacy.

When your college major choices are, black, gender or gay/lesbian studies it isn’t really necessary to read and surely math won’t be needed.

He’s a she. Although she admitted to a little experimentation in college. But, hey...it was college. She got her law degree from Lewis and Clark. Monica Lewinsky’s alma mater. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Whitey. But this is all about accommodating the children of illegals. Aside from them, Oregon is probably the whitest State in the Union.

My dad taught for 30 years in an Oregon high school. This would not have amused him. I don’t think it would have surprised him, either.

Locally, they’re putting the finishing touches on the new junior high school. It was built as part of a big bond measure that the area can ill afford. I recall the Superintendent of the local school district arguing that the upgrades were needed to bring doctors into the area for our aging populace. Apparently doctors were put off by our out-dated educational facilities. Anecdotally, I ve heard that doctors don’t have a problem with the area. Their wives, however, can’t stand the place. There is a distinct lack of cultural refinement. Just no point in being a doctor’s wife here.

Sadly, we recently had a young doctor shot in the head in a home invasion. Waiting to see who the perps are. Homeless? Illegals? Locally educated? The suspense is killing me.
