Oregon Governor signs new law allowing students to graduate without proving they can read, write, or do math

An Oregon high school diploma does not guarantee that students who earned it can read, write or do math at a high school level.

Governor Kate Brown dropped the requirement that students demonstrate they have achieved those essential skills by signing Senate Bill 744 into law. She declined again Friday to comment on why she supported suspending the proficiency requirements, reported OregonLive.

The bill was not entered into the legislative database until July 29, a departure from the standard practice of updating the public database the same day a bill is signed. Charles Boyle, the governor’s deputy communications director, said the governor’s staff told legislative staff the same day the governor signed the bill.

Boyle said in an emailed statement that suspending the reading, writing and math proficiency requirements will benefit "Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of colour."

Oregon education officials have long insisted they would not impose new graduation requirements on students who have already begun high school. New requirements would not take effect until the class of 2027. That means at least five more classes could graduate without demonstrating proficiency in math and writing.

He just rendered a high school diploma absolutely worthless. If I was in high school, I’d drop out and go for a GED. At least you have to prove you can read, write and do arithmetic.

A buddy’s kid just decided to home school all the while he had a full time job. He passed all the tests and graduated 18 months early. He made enough money to buy a used Mustang Convertible for cash as his graduation gift to himself.

How does illiteracy “benefit” minorities?

An illiterate can never even APPLY for a job.

An interesting typo in this context.

That’s great, because when are students ever going to use those subjects in real life?

Well I heard success is largely in showing up. And if you don’t, your parents could wind up in jail.
Attendance is all, academics a relic of the white supremacist past. Presuming there still is a past...

Not sure that’s bad.

I oppose government funding of education.

There are typos in #2 and #3. Oh well, we know they know the spelling.

We need an edit feature.

This is deliberate.
They don't WANT an educated populace. Especially minorities will be much more pliant and accepting of leftist ideology and vote appeals if they are ignorant and illiterate.

At least it's official now. Schools are just a warehouse for "utes" until they can be jailed as adults.

“He just rendered a high school diploma absolutely worthless. If I was in high school, I’d drop out and go for a GED. At least you have to prove you can read, write and do arithmetic.”

Our youngest son did that about 40 years ago and got his GED in a few months.

That GED certificate helped him to get basically any job he ever applied for.

I have a BS and a MBA, and I was never asked to show either one in, during, nor after a job interview.

The older brother of this son, has a double degree in engineering, and he has never been asked to show his degree.
He developed his own 2 piece job clincher. His Sat scores and certificates of the 2 two engineering disciplines.

My wife has a copy of her graduation from an top nursing school and her old RN test scores. She had/has a similar 2 piece job sheet. That was all she ever needed for any job interview to close the deal and get a job.

All of the above are in our safety deposit box, if we ever need them.
