Legislation introduced in Congress this month would require any semi-automatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine to be registered under the National Firearms Act.
The bill, H.R.4953 {To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act any semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine.}, was filed last Friday in the House by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, a Florida Democrat who is outspoken in his support of gun control measures.
"Congress passed the National Firearms Act after the 1929 Valentine's Day massacre to tightly regulate certain machine guns & shotguns," said Deutch on social media Friday, going on to say, "It's time to update this law & regulate the weapon of choice in mass shootings: semiautomatic rifles."
Lacking from the Congressman's talking points is the fact that FBI crime statistics for 2019, the most recent year available, list rifles of all kinds as the type of weapon used in 364 of 13,927 tracked homicides across the country, or in about 2 percent of cases. By comparison, knives were used in 1,476 cases, or more than four times more often, while bodily weapons such as hands and feet were used in some 600 cases. Non-firearm/cutting weapons such as rocks and blunt objects were used in 1,593 cases.
Semi-auto rifles are extremely popular on the American firearms market at all levels. First seen in domestic production with the Winchester Model 1905 β which used a circa 1901 patent β such guns have been available for well over a century. The follow-on Winchester Model 1907 was marketed with detachable 5-, 10-, and 20-round box magazines at about the time Theodore Roosevelt was president. Estimates are that the AR-15 and similar semi-automatics dubbed Modern Sporting Rifles by the NSSF, account for an estimated 19.8 million rifles in circulation, lending concrete numbers to the argument that such guns are in common use.
H.R. 4953 has been referred to the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee and has eight co-sponsors.
Time to buy some more high capacity magazines.
[[How many talked of national reciprocity for CCW and even direct selling across state lines? Did we see that? Did they even really try? No,]]
Very True- I just worry because states are now violating the constitution and passing crap in middle of night like NY did with safe act- declaring ‘imminent need’ as their excuse for doing so- and some states now declaring ‘state of emergency’ as their excuses for passing gun grabbing laws-
Molon labe! Zero compliance with tyranny !!
This could end being the vehicle to overturn the NFA.
If this were the 1980s or 1990s, I’d completely agree with you. But this is the era of Heller (and Heller II), McDonald, Caetano, etc. And the SCOTUS has moved further right since most of those rulings came into place.
There are definitely some things I wouldn’t count on this court for at all, but 2A cases? We’ve got Thomas, Gorsuch, Alito, Barrett, and Kavanaugh. Roberts will sign on to their opinions if it enables him to moderate them (i.e. restrict the scope and impact). With Ginsburg no longer part of the court, I see an easy 5-4 and a more limited 6-3 in any 2A case.
Why do you think NYC ran away with their tail tucked between their legs when NYSRPA v. NYC came up? Because everyone knew their law was going away either way and the only question was how broadly the US Supreme Court was going to knock down restrictions across the nation. I’m guessing NYC got a thousand phone calls from mayors, governors, police chiefs, etc. all telling them to drop their damn law and beg SCOTUS to declare the case moot. 2A is back, baby!
Next up they’ll ban firearms that look scary since it’d intimidate the snowflakes, make them faint or something.
Fear the government that fears your gun.
What semi auto firearms?
That’s great, but it appears that Zho Bi Den can ignore court rulings with impunity.

Approaching the use them or lose them moment.
I wouldn't piss down any of their throats if their guts were on fire.

THAT’s a good one.
And maybe hereβ¦.maybe?
They can’t keep track of illegal aliens. They can’t I.D. voters.
But they are eager to “register” 20,000,000 rifles.
require any semi-automatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine to be registered...
Registration then confiscation.
No dice.
Illegals will vote democrat many times.
Folks with firearms won’t vote democrat.
