Infrastructure Bill Would Add $256 Billion to Deficit, Analysis Finds

WASHINGTON — Republicans and Democrats rushed on Thursday to line up a Senate vote to pass the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, working to clear away the final obstacles despite a finding by Congress’s official scorekeeper that the bill would add more than $250 billion to the federal deficit over the next decade.

The flurry of activity came after three days of plodding work on the package, which would devote $550 billion in new money to rebuild the nation’s crumbling roads, bridges and rail systems and fund new climate resiliency and broadband access initiatives.

It followed an estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on the cost of the legislation, which was one of the last major hurdles to passing it. The office calculated that nearly half of the new spending — $256 billion — would be financed by adding to the nation’s debt from 2021 to 2031, contradicting the claims of Republican and Democratic proponents that the measure would fully pay for itself.

So much for the myth that it would pay for itself but we really didn't need for the CBO to tell us that.

Is this headline confusing the debt and deficit? The article seems clear that it is adding a quarter trillion to the debt.

Not good, but when the debt is $26 trillion it’s just another drop in the ocean.

These estimates are always understated. Multiply by at least 4. And why is there always a 10 year cut-off. Make it 30 years like a mortgage ... as in we are mortgaging our future... and this one never pays off.

Our overlords are doing everything they can to sink this country and suck every last dollar out of it as it goes down.

From President Trump this morning:
Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill is a disgrace. If Mitch McConnell was smart, which we’ve seen no evidence of, he would use the debt ceiling card to negotiate a good infrastructure package.

This is a 2,700 page bill that no one could have possibly read—they would have needed to take speed reading courses. It is a gift to the Democrat Party, compliments of Mitch McConnell and some RINOs, who have no idea what they are doing. There is very little on infrastructure in all of those pages. Instead, they track your driving so they can tax you. It is Joe Biden’s form of a gas tax but far bigger, far higher and, mark my words, far worse. They want to track you everywhere you go and watch everything you do!

Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill will be used against the Republican Party in the upcoming elections in 2022 and 2024. It will be very hard for me to endorse anyone foolish enough to vote in favor of this deal.

The good news is that the progressive wing in the Democrat Party will lose all credibility with this approval. Additionally, Kevin McCarthy and Republican House members seem to be against the bill. If it can’t be killed in the Senate, maybe it dies in the House!

Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats understand that this is the way to get the horrendous $3.5 trillion, actually $5 trillion, Green New Deal bill done in the House. Mitch is playing right into Nancy’s hands, not to mention the fact Chuck Schumer is already going around saying this is a big victory for the Democrats. Whether it’s the House or the Senate, think twice before you approve this terrible deal. Republicans should wait until after the Midterms when they will gain all the strength they’ll need to make a good deal, but remember, you already have the card, it’s called the debt ceiling, which the Democrats threatened us with constantly.

This ain’t working. We need a radical change. I suggest we allow our constitutional republic to collapse into its own footprint. We need an actual reset where adult patriots take the reins and leftists will be ground into the dust. If we don’t allow this it will happen anyway on their terms.

I agree totally with the sentiment in your reply. It’s gonna go that way, and not a plug nickle of the debt will be “paid back”. NESARA/GESARA will take care of that.

However, I’ll point out that it appears to me to be at odds with your tag line.

NCSWIC. Nothing.

nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office

It's nonpartisan if you think uniparty establishment types are nonpartisan. Personally, I call the all commies. As for their estimate ... triple it.

Well, the CBO guesses the $1 trillion bill will add $256 billion to the deficit.

libertylover guesses the bill will be $1.5 trillion and will add around $1 trillion to the the deficit.

Thanks, and my tag line is a direct result of certain adherents who believe that arguing and personal attack are the way to bring people together. It’s almost as if they intentionally divide.

EVERY Republican voting for this KNOWS they are assisting the Democrats to a permanent majority with the country killing reconciliation that will follow.

We should have started purging the Assistant Democrats in 2014 when they had already shown what they were.

I called my two senators to voice my opposition to the so called “infrastructure bill.”I called their Washington D.C. phone numbers and their state phone numbers. The mailboxes were all full, apparently they don’t want to hear from their constitutients.

and how do you stop the voters from putting the same idiots back in charge?

We have to educate our citizenry. Its the only way forward. They might get educated through the school of hard knocks if they leave Democrats in charge.

It's too late. An army of Anne Sullivans couldn't educate the dolts I see in front of me on a weekly basis. Give the politicians a blank check & our national credit card and stand back. Regardless of what you do they are going to spend unchecked.

We have idiots working on the books. 1 trillion dollars in spending will add 1 trillion dollars to the national debt. We are already spending 33% more each year than we are taking in taxes. That is 33% that goes directly to the debt. Add 1 trillion dollars and the debt goes up by that much.
