A crippling ice storm that left Travis Maddox and thousands of other Missouri residents without power in 2007 had an “almost apocalyptic feel to it.”
“No one could move. It just shut the whole region down for two weeks. I wasn’t as prepared as I thought,” said Maddox, a burly man of 43, sporting a long black beard, T-shirt, cargo pants, and baseball cap, while tending his garden.
Those two weeks made Maddox realize that being prepared—“prepping,” as it’s called today—was the key to a life of self-reliance and personal freedom.
As an Eagle Scout, he never forgot the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared.
“To me, the ultimate level of prepping is being self-sufficient. You’re still being modern, but you’re in control,” Maddox told The Epoch Times on Aug. 5.
In 2009, Maddox launched his YouTube channel, “The Prepared Homestead,” which now has over 32,000 subscribers.
People, he said, are waking up to the worsening reality of supply chain disruptions and food shortages, and rapid political and social changes that all point toward “a perfect storm” just ahead.
The COVID-19 lockdowns and empty store shelves only served to heighten popular sentiment that the “old normal” is gone, he said.

PING!
I think it is the Mormons that have a tenet of keeping a stock at all times enough food to feed the household for one year.
Just bought a new generator to replace the one I bought 22 years ago.
I’m certainly not the biggest prepper around here, but I suspect I’m better than 99% of the country.
Supermarkets around here still have shelf gaps all over the place. Seems to vary from week-to-week, but seeing more off-brands and fewer varieties.
Found rolls of paper towels with printed designs on them! Saving them for a special occasion. Sad, isn’t it?
“A huge portion of our country is saying you’ve gone too far,” Maddox said. “We’re seeing not just a rapid change in politics and policies and the economy, we’re seeing a rapid change in the heart and soul of America.”
Nailed it.
We have a good food supply, & we’ve discussed getting a generator to at least run our well pump. One of these days...
Same here. We’ve got enough food for a couple months and are laying in more stock of other items including several ways to cook and purify water
The Colonel’s Wife and I are finally on the same page and I’m researching generators to find a happy medium between not enough and “everything’s normal”. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how reasonable some of these set ups are.
Just looked at Generac pricing. Not bad pre installed
Anyone have suggestions? 3000 sq ft home.
Buy one that runs on propane or gasoline. Propane can be stored indefinitely, gasoline can't.
Costco had this on sale in-store for $699 a month ago. I jumped on it!

I intend to never put gasoline in it, only use propane or natgas. But I have the option!
Those Generac automatic generators are pretty reasonable priced and are there when you need it.
The price isn’t much more than a good name brand generator.
I think the prices start at 2k-3k.
OUrs is 3200....20kw will be just right. Get NG AND the Propane hookup. That way when an earthquake happens, you can switch out your NG to a portable Propane tank. If you are lucky, you can store a 500 or 1000lb propane tank on your property and you can be very self sufficient. Propane storage is safe and efficient. Be SURE to get dual fuel capable genset and the switching kit if you have propane and NG fuels in your area.
We got a Cummins but have also had Kohler. 20KW.
Get a good auto transfer switch so when your genset is running, it doesn’t feed the line backwards and kill electrical linemen. Mandated in most areas.....
Duel fuel is the best. I just bought one. I’ve got it hooked up to start with propane, and the gas tank is empty. If I have to use it, I can then fill it with gas for performance and then run it empty when the power comes back on.
I’ve ruined more than one generator by leaving gas in the tank, thinking I’d need it again soon (2004 hurricane season, for example). Didn’t lose power subsequently, and forgot the gen set gas tank needed draining...
This is an important time to stock up. It may not be needed, but it may well be necessary. The trains have been slowed down; leading to some spot shortages.
One other thing: PURE gasoline can be stored up to six months, or 1-2 years with an additive such as STA-BIL or Seafoam.
Gasoline with ethanol stores for only about 3 months.
I have been on a rampage this week. Since I have prepped for awhile I am now buying sutures. Blood clotting powder. Betadine. Concentrating on medical now.
I highly recommend everyone stock up. Shortages are coming...again.
Indeed.
Satan’s children are “in charge” of our government now, and the District of Corruption knows zero boundaries when it comes to their senseless mayhem and destruction toward We The People.
People should consider fortifying their homes with an absolute survivalist mentality, and everything imaginably necessary should be in good supply.
Only Heaven knows what these truly vile creatures are going to do over the next few years to all of us.
Godspeed, God Bless, and may Almighty God protect all of us from their evil.
