Hiroshima marks 76th anniversary of US atomic bombing

TOKYO (AP) — Hiroshima on Friday marked the 76th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing, as the mayor of the Japanese city urged global leaders to unite to eliminate nuclear weapons, just as they are united against the coronavirus.

Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged world leaders to commit to nuclear disarmament as seriously as they tackle a pandemic that the international community recognizes as “threat to humanity.”

“Nuclear weapons, developed to win wars, are a threat of total annihilation that we can certainly end, if all nations work together,” Matsui said.

The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. It dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered Aug. 15, ending World War II and its nearly half-century of aggression in Asia.

Did they mark the anniversary of what they were doing to get bombed? Or was this conveniently left out?

And many other atrocities, medical experiments, etc... It took two bombs and Hirohito to break the deadlock of the cabinet to agree to surrender.

It had to be done and President Truman made the right decision. Why should one more American Sailor, Soldier, Marine or Airman die when we had such a weapon available? And there were still millions of Japanese soldiers in the field around Asia. How many Americans and how ten-times many more Japanese would have died in an invasion of the Home Islands?

All the armchair quarterbacking in hindsight is worthless and offered by individuals who ‘never had their b*lls on the anvil’ as Paul Tibbetts said.

Pearl Harbor was conveniently left out. Along with the baatan death march, the raping of nanking and the horrible treatment of POWs by the japs..

its funny how someone who was just beating and raping a child suddenly wants his rights recognized as soon as a solders boot is crushing his throat..

My Father and his WW II friends never forgot Pearl Harbor - every December 7th The American Legion and VFW Posts would raise the Flag at a local park and play Taps.

Also took forcing Hirohito to admit publicly that he was only a human being and not a god.

Hiroshima was bombed among other reasons to kill the mayor. Death to the Japanese leadership was required to end the war and to save American lives.

Although Hiroshima is eulogized, more Japanese died in the firebombing of Tokyo than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima

The mission from the Marianas to Japan by literally hundreds of B 29’s and P 51’s had become almost a daily milk run by August 6, 1945. The A bomb merely speeded up the total destruction of Japan

And the thousands of people dying in slave labor camps monthly. Those camps in the conquered countries were controlled by the Japanese army.

Potentially millions of American troops and Japanese civilians would have died if Americans had invaded / conquered Japan, possibly among them my father who survived the North Africa and Italian campaigns. I’m sorry we were forced to use the bomb to end the war but I believe I’m here because of it.

It took two nuclear bombs to convince them to surrender.

It was a near thing. In one of the Pearl Harbor books, the Epilogue told of a discussion between an American and a Japanese diplomat. At one point, the Japanese guy was asked why they waited until the second bomb hit. He said that they didn't want any more dropped on them. The American said that we only had two. The Japanese guy reared back and said "If we had known that you only had two . . .", then diplomatically shut up.

The Epilogue also told of a speech a Japanese General made to his troops. It was along the line of "Yes, things look bad now, but if we redouble our efforts . . .". This occurred AFTER the second bomb had been dropped.
