Buried in the “Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” in the U.S. Senate is approval for the Department of Transportation (DOT) to test a new federal tax on every mile driven by individual Americans.
The bill directs Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to establish a pilot program to demonstrate a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee designed “to restore and maintain the long-term solvency of the Highway Trust Fund.”
The objectives of the pilot program include:
To test the design, acceptance, implementation, and financial sustainability of a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee.
To address the need for additional revenue for surface transportation infrastructure and a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee.
To provide recommendations relating to the adoption and implementation of a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee.
Although the new tax is described as a pilot program and would initially rely upon “volunteers” representing all 50 states, the infrastructure measure would also require the Treasury Department to establish a mechanism to collect motor vehicle per-mile user fees from the participants.
The legislation would create a new “Federal System Funding Alternative Advisory Board” to advise Buttigieg on establishing and operating the program. The legislative language in the bill doesn’t specifically call for an end to the advisory board.
The advisory body would be required to include as members “at a minimum” representatives from state departments of transportation, the trucking industry, data security experts “with expertise in personal privacy,” academic experts on surface transportation, consumer advocates, operators of toll systems, owners of motor vehicle fleets, and tribal representatives.

I already pay my fair share. I will deduct any mileage tax from my fed income tax. F the feds.
Joe Biden came out against it the following day because — as others have noted here — it is a highly regressive tax.
That’s right. And their push for more fuel efficient cars has backfired on them in less gas tax revenues coming in.
Drive an old car. If going on longer trips rent a car.
For all of those chipped like a dog, your phone will go insane trying to locate you. They pair locate.
“I’m fine with a reasonable tax load that pays for keeping proper infrastructure.”
You know that fancy infrastructure bill the Republicans are helping them pass right now?
I read that 5% of the money will go to actual infrastructure.
Project much?
It couldn't possibly be because Americans know that government is the greediest, most corrupt and murderous force on Earth and that most of the money goes to lavish salaries, perks and pensions for the bureaucrats, could it?
There are thousands of government employees getting 6-figure pensions on the East and Left coasts.
In my own state the government slugs talk like you, but the reason we won't vote for another gas tax increase is because the previous increases have NEVER gone to roads. They go into the bureaucrat wet dream slush fund.
People aren't as stupid as you wish they were.
I wonder what kind of taxes they’ll want to impose on electric cars.
These people are contemptible. Same with property tax con-job.
My take is that too many *billions* were siphoned off for ‘inner city mass transit’ that has **nothing** to do with highways but plenty yo do with political pork spending.
^ This If they spent the money the already get to maintain the infrastructure in place we’d have first class roads.
“Pete Butt-head floated this “mileage tax” idea within hours of being nominated as the U.S. Transportation Secretary.”
I remember that. This is all payback to the commie voters who want everyone on a bus, subway, bike, or on foot.
You may have hit on a bit of a conflict for them.
To get the mileage up they are going to have to declare "all clear" on the scamdemic.
That conflicts with using the delta sniffles as a scare tactic to continue breaking election laws with mass mail-in ballots, "drop off boxes," etc.
What to do, what to do?
.
The only good socialist is a dead socialist.
It’s just like the Smart Meters...
If your car doesn’t have the Technology, you’ll pay to get it installed and certified, simple.
You pay, as always.
And the Republicans have sold us out again.
And yet — as I explain in my later post — they don’t seem to complain very much when they pay MUCH HIGHER taxes when it comes to other forms of taxation.
Except that’s not how it works in many suburban towns in major metro areas like New York, Washington, etc. In those places, the “public schools” effectively ARE private schools — because the property taxes price all the Deplorables and riff-raff out of the school district.
I already pay out the ass on Kansas personal property tax on my two vehicles.
Everyone has their hand in your wallet and mine
Local, county, state, and federal.
